#TamilNewYear is celebrated on the 1st day of the Tamil Month Chithirai which falls on April 13th / 14th every year, this is based on precise astronomical calculation and events, when sun leaves Meena Rasi (Pisces) and enters the first zodiac sign Mesha Rasi (Aries).

Not only Tamilians, but several other cultures (non Abrahamic) around Asia celebrates April 14th + or - 1 day as their new year.

Tamil New Year calculation is not based on seasons / places, if we depend on these entities, we cannot get an accurate date & time, we need something that is fixed which can’t be altered even if we look after 1000’s of years.

Yes we have one, that is Zodiac. Zodiac are fixed set of stars and they don’t change, we can use that as reference point for our calendar. Don’t confuse that with your zodiac astrology signs..

People who celebrate new year on April 14, Hindus & other Asian culture follow Sidereal zodiac system, this system is based upon the position of the sun in relation to the star constellations as they appear in the night sky (measured in the early morning sunrise).

Western astrology favours the Tropical zodiac, while Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac. both divide the ecliptic into a number of signs named after constellations.While the sidereal system defines the signs based on the fixed stars.

The Tropical zodiac system defines it based on the position of vernal equinox., Vedic astrology has measured earth wobbling in their calculation but Tropical Zodiac used by westerners do not..
