Here's my Album of the Year list...links to albums in the thread below. It was hard to narrow it down to 20 this year! I feel like there was just a ton of really good stuff that came out! 1/21 Image
Amenra, De Doorn amenra.bandcamp.com/album/de-doorn
This is an album of absolutely massive and dark post-metal. Lots of super heavy riffs...but also lots of quiet spaces. 2/21
Anna Pest, Dark Arms Reach Skyward With Bone White Fingers annapest.bandcamp.com/album/dark-arm…
Super technical death metal, a bit blackened for good measure. I keep listening trying to make sense of this album, but it overwhelms my senses...in a really good way 3/21
Body Void, Bury Me Beneath This Rotting Earth bodyvoid.bandcamp.com/album/bury-me-…
Blackened doom...very sludgy, kind of noisy, slow, intense, and very rad. 4/21
Caïna, Take Me Away From All This Death cainaband.bandcamp.com/album/take-me-…
This is what happens when an absolutely amazing artist throws industrial, post-punk, noise, and black metal into a blender...and gives you a perfect depiction of the last year and a half of pandemic awfulness 5/21
Carcass, Torn arteries carcass.bandcamp.com/album/torn-art…
I don't know if I love this riffy, shreddy, thrashy album because I've been listening to Carcass since I was in high school...but I do... 6/21
Dakhma, Blessings of Amurdad dakhmacavern.bandcamp.com/album/blessing…
Holy hell, this is an amazing exploration of death and immortality in Zoroastrian thought. Its blackened death metal with a bit of middle eastern flare. And the moment I heard it I knew it was going on my AOTY list 7/21
Darkthrone, Eternal Hails…… peaceville.bandcamp.com/album/eternal-…
I wouldn't have predicted that this would be an album that I would listen to so many times this year. And I don't know what to say about it beyond saying that I am amazed that Darkthrone keeps making such good music 8/21
Divide and Dissolve, Gas lit divideanddissolve.bandcamp.com/album/gas-lit
This is decolonial doom metal, which calls attention to the horrors of colonialism, and the possibility of transformative practices and the cultivation of freedom. 9/21
Everson Poe, Grief
eversonpoe.bandcamp.com/album/grief
This is a mindbogglingly good album of dark, heavy, blackened sludge--with a touch of funeral doom. And the story that it tells, as well as the samples that it uses, put you in a dark space that's worth sitting in for a while 10/21
Full of hell, Garden of burning apparitions
fullofhell.bandcamp.com/album/garden-o…
It's clear that every move on this, ultra-noisy death grind album has been thought out in meticulous detail. I'm still not sure that I get it, but I keep listening to it and loving it more every time I do 11/21
greyfleshtethered, The dark being greyfleshtethered.bandcamp.com/album/the-dark…
I don't really know how to describe this massively atmospheric, sometimes beautiful, black metal/dark ambient/dungeon synth project. But the world that it builds is one that I want to spend a lot more time exploring 12/21
Kaatayra, Inpariquipê kaatayra.bandcamp.com/album/inpariqu…
Everything that Caio Lemos does is absolute fire...but this album pushes further into the touches of indigenous Brazilian music that he always plays with on Kaatayra albums, making you feel like you're in the jungle with him 13/21
Lamp of Murmuur, Submission and slavery
lampofmurmuur.bandcamp.com/album/submissi…
You see the cover, and you already know that this is probably going to be goth infused raw black metal--which is basically is. But it's creative as hell and I keep coming back to listen to it... 14/21
Nadja, Luminous rot nadja.bandcamp.com/album/luminous…
I've seen this described as dreamsludge. That seems right, and it's the kind of thing that you just want to put on an sink into 15/21
Non Serviam, Il pleut partout derrière non-serviam.bandcamp.com/album/il-pleut…
I mentioned this EP the other day, but it’s pretty much a full album, with a couple of fun covers, which integrates industrial and metal with lots of other cool stuff 16/21
Panopticon, …And again into the light thetruepanopticon.bandcamp.com/album/and-agai…
This isn't a surprising album if you've been following Panopticon, but it is the pinnacle of the project that he's been working on for a while, and it's a beautiful depiction of multiple forms of duḥkha 17/21
Pessimista, Ocaso pessimista.bandcamp.com/album/ocaso
I feel like this Brazilian atmospheric black metal doesn't get discussed nearly as often as it should. But it nails the attempt to search through struggle and strife to find a pathway toward liberation 18/21
Putrecine, the fading flame
tridroid.bandcamp.com/album/the-fadi…
This is absolutely amazing antifascist death metal. Loads of awesome riffs, lots of good solos and 19/21
Spectral wound, A diabolical thirst
spectralwound.bandcamp.com/album/a-diabol…
Full speed ahead black metal. I listened to this a ton when it came out, and just went back to it earlier this week: it's fire beyond fire. 20/21
Victory over the sun, Nowherer votsband.bandcamp.com/album/nowherer
This is an amazing album, super technical, very innovative, and "written entirely in the 17 equal divisions of the octave (17EDO) tuning system, on guitars I refretted myself" 21/21
