Our dear leader shredded this morning on the US NPR comedy talk show "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me": "The Brits first realised something was up with the party that wasn't a party when they saw pictures of Boris Johnson with his hair combed..."
"Why does he always look like he's been on a three day bender?". "Is that at the start or the end of the party?"
"Or do his parties always take place under helicopter blades?"
He also has multiple children...has lost count
And so it went on. It was very funny. Except it's really not, when it's your own PM, and your own country suffering from the international ridicule his behaviour invites.

1: The real national security threats to this country are a) the one posed by the rise in autocratic, populist regimes- Russia, China, perhaps even US, if Trump is reelected, and b) our flailing economy which leaves us ill equipped to respond effectively.
2. Leaving the ECHR is a populist proposal which will not stop migrants trying to come here, but will strain our alliances, including with US, jeopardize Good Friday Agreement and reintroduce tensions with EU, distracting us from the real threats we face (see 1)
Terrible choice of words. “We want you to be safe”; or “we support Israel’s need to protect itself from terrorists” would be better…alongside insistence that Israel respect international humanitarian law, and does not conflate all Palestinians with Hamas. 🧵
No doubt, loads of people think US/Biden is dreadful for giving strong backing to Israel, yet only he has the authority/leverage to try to restrain Israel from going too far, facilitate humanitarian access to Gaza, and stop conflict spreading.
He may or may not succeed, given inflamed passions all round. But, Biden’s efforts need to be supported. Imagine if Trump was in charge? UK/Sunak are only bit players. Arab leaders are irresponsible. EU divided on issues. Russia/China/Iran are hypocritical, and milking situation
🧵I wrote this article about Braverman's disgusting speech last week. I've been brewing/stewing on it since. I want to add a few more points. First, as someone who used to advise Home Office on refugee admissions, I can say she is utterly wrong to say 1/ bylinetimes.com/2023/09/27/the…
that refugee criteria are being applied too generously. I recall Home Office staff consulting embassies about local conditions and literally begging us to find reasons to be able to reject asylum seekers. Eg, could someone be returned to a different part of their home country?
Second, at embassies, we were advised to make it as hard as possible to allow anyone in through our front door, who might make a claim. Potentially put us in difficult situation, if someone was being pursued by angry mob, or was a well-known opposition figure, harassed by govt.
Yes! Here are all the benefits we’ll see by remaining outside the EU: - free to watch EU and US make the rules, with no input from us;
- free to grapple with migrant issues by ourselves, no longer able to return them to the EU country they came through;🧵
- Free to wait in the slow lanes at passport controls, while EU members sail through
- Free to spend our own money to help deprived areas, rather than having to receive EU structural funds
- Free to let our scientists invent things more expensively with less int’l collaboration
- Free to try to build more affordable homes in our tiny, nimby, countryside, rather than buy nice retirement chalets on the continent;
- Free to organize our own school trips within our own country, helping our kids learn Welsh or Gaelic; no more pesky French school exchanges
It’s worse, @annettedittert. There’s no “normal” at all in 🇬🇧 any more. We’re accelerating down a plug hole into a cesspit of lies, deceit, collusion and corruption. I never thought I’d use such extreme language, but actually I don’t have the words to capture my despair.
The UK is entering failed state territory; when political system malfunctions; politicians are motivated by greed; unelected populists call the shots, acting in collusion with media; public services are collapsing; and the Head of State is a puppet.
All that was good is being destroyed; decent politicians sidelined; honest public servants attacked; lawyers and judges branded “enemies”; people who care about poverty, refugees, inequality or the future of our planet decried as woke do-gooders, liable to arrest for nuisance;
A is for arrogance - as in "attitude of too many in power"; asinine, as in "quality of political debate"; accountability, as in "lack of"; and abuse, as in "systematic".
B is for (what else) Brexit. Bloody, bloody Brexit, destroying British business, society, institutions, delivered by the Big Beast of Lying Bastards, blustering Boris Johnson.
