Our dear leader shredded this morning on the US NPR comedy talk show "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me": "The Brits first realised something was up with the party that wasn't a party when they saw pictures of Boris Johnson with his hair combed..."
"Why does he always look like he's been on a three day bender?". "Is that at the start or the end of the party?"
"Or do his parties always take place under helicopter blades?"
He also has multiple children...has lost count
And so it went on. It was very funny. Except it's really not, when it's your own PM, and your own country suffering from the international ridicule his behaviour invites.

I’m voting @LibDems. Fortunately, in my constituency, they’re best alternative to Tories anyway. But Labour cowardice and dishonesty on Brexit deserves to cost them votes. Just because I blame the Tories most for our current plight doesn’t mean I must let Labour off the hook. 🧵
It’s tough to write this, because I want Cons to receive historic thumping, and I certainly don’t want to give the snake oil candidates of Reform any opening. I support Starmer as our next PM. But dishonesty over Brexit will handicap ability to grow UK economy and improve lives.
Until our politicians address the elephant in the room, UK governance will continue to stumble and lag, and more warped policy making will ensue, trying to paper over the damage and lies of Brexit, rather than properly redress them.

I wasn’t always this way. I was once a loyal civil servant, trying to do my job conscientiously. Even after I resigned, I largely kept my head down, until the growing dysfunction and dishonesty in govt compelled me to speak out, and say “this is NOT normal!” It’s been a journey🧵
@mrjamesob on @TheNewsAgents recently described how it wasn’t even Brexit per se that bothered him (tho’ he personally opposed it) but the way in which it was delivered and the ensuing damage to Uk democracy and institutions which outraged him most. I feel exactly the same way.
There are days when cold fear grips my insides at the internal chaos inside UKand US. The world is on fire, authoritarianism on the rise, international order breaking down, polarization, extremism, disinformation, cultural wars. It’s 1938, but no Churchill or Roosevelt in sight.

I remain flabbergasted at the Tories’ gall in continuing to claim black is white, up is down, etc, including the ludicrous claim that they are good stewards of our economy, which has allegedly “outperformed” other major economies. Read this BRUTAL extract from today’s WSJ: 🧵 Image
“Britain has had one of the worst performances of major economies since pandemic, with lower growth, higher inflation and weaker investment than its peers.” “Britain also suffered one of the developed world’s highest per capita death tolls in first year of the pandemic”…
“Economic performance can seldom be tied to any leader’s specific decisions, and the shocks of recent years hit almost everyone. Still, Britain has been uniquely bad at coping with them”….

A small anecdote. I attended a DEI awareness course at FCO. Everyone there thought they were already sensitive, aware, “right-on types”, who of course, would never endorse racist, sexist or other discriminatory behaviour. The attendees were completely stunned when….🧵1/5
…a Welsh participant, who’d been sitting quietly at the back, largely ignored by everyone, suddenly erupted in anger to say how for years he’d had to listen to english people make endless condescending, unfunny, patronizing swipes and jokes about his nation and people. 2/5
We were absolutely gobsmacked. We thought we were so enlightened- would NEVER be rude about Pakistanis, or migrants, or Muslims, or Jews, or gays etc…yet had completely overlooked/failed to recognize the patronizing racism existing for aeons in plain sight inside the UK. 3/5

There’s so much wrong with this, it’s hard to know where to begin…but here’s a first shot. 🧵
1: The real national security threats to this country are a) the one posed by the rise in autocratic, populist regimes- Russia, China, perhaps even US, if Trump is reelected, and b) our flailing economy which leaves us ill equipped to respond effectively.
2. Leaving the ECHR is a populist proposal which will not stop migrants trying to come here, but will strain our alliances, including with US, jeopardize Good Friday Agreement and reintroduce tensions with EU, distracting us from the real threats we face (see 1)

Terrible choice of words. “We want you to be safe”; or “we support Israel’s need to protect itself from terrorists” would be better…alongside insistence that Israel respect international humanitarian law, and does not conflate all Palestinians with Hamas. 🧵
No doubt, loads of people think US/Biden is dreadful for giving strong backing to Israel, yet only he has the authority/leverage to try to restrain Israel from going too far, facilitate humanitarian access to Gaza, and stop conflict spreading.
He may or may not succeed, given inflamed passions all round. But, Biden’s efforts need to be supported. Imagine if Trump was in charge? UK/Sunak are only bit players. Arab leaders are irresponsible. EU divided on issues. Russia/China/Iran are hypocritical, and milking situation
