Afghanistan’s precipitation status: Thread 👇
The water year in Afghanistan begins from the 1st of October and continue till May. As almost 2.5 months have gone, blow I look in to some of the Afghanistan's precipitation statistics. 1/9
Afghanistan began a drier water year in comparison to the average and last year conditions. The reason is recurrence of the #LaNina in the Pacific Ocean.
A comparison of the current and last year is shown here. 2/9
The cumulative decline in precipitation from October till Dec 05, 2021 is depicted here. As can be observed most parts of Afghanistan received less than 50 % precipitation of the normal conditions. 3/9
Looking in detail to the past 30 days:
1st map shows # of rain days, less than 2 for most parts of AFG.
2nd map shows consecutive dry days, above 26 for most parts of the country.
3rd map shows accumulative rain, which is very less.
4th map shows number of days since rain. 4/9
The daily precipitation forecasts show some rain in northern Afghanistan the day after tomorrow and next week. (1st week in daily form, 2nd week is cumulative precipitation) 5/9
However, the cumulative precipitation decline level is likely to decrease even further in the next weeks. The below map depicts the expected drop from 06 Sep (Sep is typically dry in AFG) till Dec 20, 2021. Map predicts about up to 60% decline in cumulative precipitation. 6/9
This dryness resulted in decline of accumulated snow in the mountains of Afghanistan. Below maps depicts cumulative deficit of snow till Dec 11, 2021. 7/9
Seasonal forecasts indicate that January and February 2022 will also be drier than normal. However, rainfalls are most likely in March and April 2022 (Starting from mid Feb 2022). 8/9
What implication will it have for water resources in Afghanistan? How will it affect the country, its population & economy? are questions that need to be addressed in a detailed article. If any printing media is interested, please DM me with your offers. 9/9
