NOW: the hearing to consider contempt referrals for Mark Meadows is underway. I'll be live tweeting...
Bennie Thompson (BT): we are north of 300 witnesses, 30K documents and over 350 tips on the tipline. We are making progress and our finding will be out in the open soon. We will have public hearings once we have the entire story.
BT: the report referring Meadows is clear and convincing. Meadows played a role. Don't let lawsuits or op-eds about privilege claims confuse you. He started by cooperating and handed over records, but that's just the first step.
As the records raised questions, he changed his mind and told us to "pound sand" on the SAME DAY his book was published, which details much of what we wanted to ask. He also appeared on national TV (Fox), so he has no credible excuse
BT: we then got a letter from meadows' lawyer today and that will be entered into the record. Nearly everyone else has cooperated with our investigation.
Liz Cheney (LC): Let me give three examples of text messages Meadows handed over to us that we have questions about. The mob was provoked to violence by Donald Trump. But for 187 minutes, trump refused to act.
LC. Meadows received numerous text messages which he has produced without any privilege claims. These messages leave NO DOUBT the white house knew about the violence...
LC: One text he received said "we are under siege at the capitol." Another: "They have breached the capitol'. A third "They are storming the capitol. breaking windows and doors rushing in. Is trump going to say anything?"
LC: a fourth message "there's an armed standoff at the chamber door." Another saying "we are all helpless.". Another from a trump aide: "Trump has to tell them to dissipate, Someone is going to get killed."
LC: Another text said "TELL THEM TO GO HOME". Another "POTUS needs to calm this shit down." Multiple FOX news hosts texted meadows "Mark, the president needs to tell people in the capitol to go home, this is hurting all of us" (Laura ingraham wrote that)
Sean Hannity to Meadows in a text: "Can he make a statement? Ask people to leave the capitol"

THREAD: A couple of interesting things. I'm sure you've noticed by now the deliberate legalese used by Liz Cheney repeatedly during recent hearings. "Whether trump by action or inaction corruptly sought to obstruct or impeded Congress' official proceeding." This is no accident 1/
Liz Cheney's refrain is nearly word-for-word 18 U.S. Code § 1512(c)(3): "Whoever corruptly obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding or attempts to do so." I find it interesting that a MoC who can't bring criminal charges is using prosecutorial language. 2/
If you listen to @dailybeanspod or watch @glennkirschner2, you've heard us talk frequently about the importance of the DoJ charging JanSixers with Obstructing an Official Proceeding because by pleading guilty, they admit that they were there to stop the certification. 3/

THREAD: Seemingly conflicting ideologies I hold at once:

The DoJ is busting its ass and also taking too long

I wish Garland would tell us more but glad he’s tight-lipped

Mueller did his job but left questions unanswered

The J6 committee is kickass but also not forthcoming 1/
Secrecy is necessary but so is transparency

Garland is good but also too trepidatious

I like that DoJ is suing Texas but hate that they’re repping E Jean Carroll

Justice takes a long time to get right but we don’t have a lot of time 2/
Biden is doing a good job but makes mistakes

Moderates are stripping the BBB but good is better than perfect

Inflation is bad but recovering from a pandemic is good

I appreciate the system but OLC memos are garbage 3/

Zoe Lofgren: I knew and served with Meadows. We got along reasonably well. It's shocking that we have to face the fact that Meadows admits he played a role in trying to undermine the results of the 2020 election.
Leading up to the attack, the white house was instructing the DoJ to investigate conspiracy theories to benefit trump. We need to talk to Meadows about that.
Meadows interacted with - allegedly - some of our own colleagues in congress. Meadows has acknowledged he has non-privileged documents and communications.

BREAKING: The contempt hearing tonight won't just include a vote, it will include significant new information laying out what was going on in real time. That includes texts between Meadows and former WH employees and a trump family member. Source: @jamiegangel @CNN
I will be live tweeting the hearing starting at 7 PM EST, and I imagine it will be publicly televised on the majors.
If the major networks don’t air it, you can watch here: c-span.org/video/?516687-…

BREAKING: THREAD: a new 51-page document issued by the J6 committee reveals some new info about Mark Meadows. First, Meadows spoke with Patel and Chris Miller NONSTOP on 1/6, and knows if and when trump spoke to them about National Guard deployment 1/
Also, Meadows sent an email saying the National Guard would be there to PROTECT PRO TRUMP PEOPLE. That’s especially apparent in the 1/4 memo Chris Miller wrote effectively knee-capping the 1/6 response. 2/
Additionally, it was Meadows that introduced trump to Clark, who would eventually write the letters to states whose electors they wanted Pence to throw out telling them to send fraudulent electors for Trump instead. 3/

THREAD: C. Flynn & W. Piatt. I called it back in February. In a recent memo reviewed by @politico, COL Matthews confirms Flynn & Piatt are "absolute and unmitigated liars" who DELAYED the national guard. @SecDef & @DeptofDefense need to get the truth to the @January6thCmte 1/
