The #UConn Huskies is an anamoly in college athletics. They love basketball more than anything in a world where it’s FBS football or nothing. While schools look to get into P5 leagues or position themselves into an expanded playoff, Huskies fans just want “don’t be meme bad”
Their old home the AAC says that they could have had a chance to get shitloads of money, and a chance to be a big boy and a potential CFP contender, only to now be adrift and left to either die or drop to FCS for an inferior product.
To many, #UConn has now doomed themselves to a life of obscurity where the #AAC or #ACC could have given them a platform. But Huskies fans are fine since it means more games against Villanova, Providence, St. John’s, and Seton Hall. While 49 other states say that the league is…
…An imitation of what once was, and what can never be again apparently. And that’s not counting the stars aligning to meet old foes like Pitt and Syracuse and Boston College, be it on the hardwood or the gridiron.
Seems that everyone believes football is the be all end all of college athletics, and #UConn has doomed themselves by not being in a place to get cash and prestige from conference games, bowl-tie ins, and the College Football Playoff.
Instead, the Huskies are going to the other side of the 2013 football divide, which many feel is an imitation because 1. No football to speak of and 2. Fox doesn’t have the night of ESPN. But Huskies fans don’t care about that because old rivalries are back.
Meanwhile, the #AAC thinks #UConn is stupid for giving up the chance to compete for football glory and move up to power status (be it P5 or P6), like the gap between the best teams in the American and the worst isn’t significant.
Tell me, #AAC, #UConn, is there a consistent level of quality in football between say, CFP bound Cocinatti and not bowling Tulane? On the other side, what’s the gap between the top of the Big East and DePaul, who hasn’t gone dancing in over a decade?
Football and men’s basketball are the kings of college athletics, and it seems that these days, it seems you gotta pick a side, and everyone’s going for the former because money talks. This is why #UConn seems to be an anomaly these days.
They’re willing to wander the desert of being an FBS Indeoendent not named Notre Dame in the name of east coast basketball rivalries and a conference tournament in NYC. I guess the #AAC thought #UConn could be like Duke or Kentucky.
Schools with storied basketball programs with football teams that can be seen as good but not great but can still go bowling and be capable of something amazing if they catch fire, especially with an expanded College Football Playoff.
Except UConn said “to Hell with that setup. We’re going to go play basketball and build our 12 fans schedule the way we see fit.” While this is a wins and losses and championships business at the end of the day, is football really that big of a deal that…
…every college athletics decision has to circle around it? And in the AAC, for all the talk of the schools going to the Big XII, there’s still the matter of the schools sticking around that don’t get that P5 invite. How are they doing?
For the likes of UCF, Cincinnati, Houston, and Memphis, there also South Florida, Tulane, Tulsa, and East Carolina. Where does #UConn fit on that scale of #AAC member schools?
What’s important to one school and its athletic department may not be the same for another. #UConn is saying: “College athletics desires aren’t one size fits all, stop acting like they are”. And because of that, it’s Huskies vs. The World apparently.
How long does it take for things to get the documentary treatment in sports, 30 for 30 or otherwise? Because I think there’s a great case for a documentary already.
*game, dammit. Even if Rentschler Field isn’t what you’d call a “storied football venue”
*might. Going fast, you miss things
