1/10 Very happy to share my first PhD paper in @naturesustainab on the relationship between modern energy access and fertility transition in 44 countries over 26 years. πŸ’‘πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦πŸͺ΅

Team work with @RmnHoffmann, @pppichler and Helga Weisz (@PIK_Climate @IIASAVienna @WICVienna @OeAW)
2/10 Today ~ 2.6 billion people lack access to modern energy, and a large share of women worldwide do not have complete control over their reproductive choices. What empowers women to make reproductive choices?
3/10 Access to modern energy improves women’s well-being as it saves time on household chores, improves health and enables access to education and information.
These foster women’s ability to make reproductive choices, which tends to reduce birth rates.
4/10 We found access to electricity and modern cooking fuels to have a strong impact on fertility rates, in particular in regions with high fertility. We used data from 155 DHS surveys from 44 countries and 403 sub-national regions. @DHSprogram
5/10 Women’s education also plays a key role in fertility transitions. We found that modern energy access and education have complementary effects. πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“βš‘οΈ
6/10 Achieving universal access to electricity, combined with rapid progress in education levels, could lead to a 19% decline in birth rates in 24 sub-Saharan African countries, compared to a baseline scenario.
7/10 This is great news! Why?
Expanding access to modern energy is likely to accelerate the demographic transition, which means that reducing poverty and achieving gender equality will require overall less energy consumption and emissions. #SDGoals
8/10 Policies to expand modern energy access could simultaneously reduce poverty πŸ“‰, improve health β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή, enhance gender equality ✊and mitigate climate change 🌍. Such programs would target women's well-being, and fertility decline would be just a consequence. #SDGoals

10/10 The study is fully reproducible in #rmarkdown and #rstats. The code and data can be found on this git repository: gitlab.pik-potsdam.de/belmin/fertili…
