A Covid death doesn’t end with those final breaths, the body becoming cold nor the ultimate stillness that signal life has gone. Every decision thereafter is clouded by Covid. Very quickly clothes must be decided upon. The clothes for the funeral and ultimate cremation.

Nursing staff must dress and wash the loved one who is now defined as a Covid death. Short notice to get the clothes You can’t go in later to change any item. If you miss the deadline, it is too late. The body is sealed in a series of bags. My sister lies in a morgue in bags.

She is in a bag, within another bag. Sealed away from the air. She will be cremated. There can be no open coffin, no more final goodbyes. As a Covid death my sister’s body now represents a danger. In life she was never a danger. But here we are, this is Covid.

A life cruelly cut short by an invisible enemy. A death shrouded in pain & fear. A funeral constrained by Covid rules and safety.
Today I saw 18 registered dead in Scotland. My sister was registered in that 18. 17 other families grieve their loss too.

Tomorrow, and the day after, more families will feel the depth of pain as hearts break. They too will hear jingle bells and feel a disconnect with this time of year. My only solace is that Christmas is about love, peace and families. I hope we all have a truly peaceful Christmas.

The public have been told the vulnerable are just as well protected as the rest of us. I want people to know that it isn’t true. Many are not and can’t even know until it is too late. Today many families worry, as we did, hope for recover, for life. So, so many, so so worried.
