OK. I know that most people who follow me are intelligent humans. However I am tweeting this in the hope I reach those who aren't (and those who don't follow me).
Please - I beg of you - don't get a pet for Xmas, unless you understand the commitment this requires...1/
...I have three cats and two dogs. All are demanding in different ways. The cats keep me awake at night (cats are bastards, and I love them) and one of my dogs is seriously reactive. We can't have people to the house (we are employing a 1:1 behaviourist in the NY)...2/
Please understand how much vet bills will cost (my daughter has insurance - one of her cat's vet bill's has exceeded £10K in 3yrs. She has insurance); they are phenomenally expensive. I am not criticising vets, but am emphasising the cost of private treatment...3/
... I have seen so many re-homing requests over the last 12 months, because people are no longer working from home.
Please - I beg of you - think of the animal before you bring them home. They don't understand why you are abandoning them... 4/
... and your decision to re-home will cause untold - and possibly irreparable - damage to them.

Thank you for reading this thread,

End.

Unpacking boxes - and boxes - and MORE fucking boxes of books.
I think I need to buy e-books from now on; this is fucking madness. We don't have enough shelves here to accommodate them all immediately.
Dust in the air is making me cough.
I have bought every single Booker Prize shortlisted book for the last who-knows-how-many-years, plus longlisted by authors I love. I've also read books by an author & actively sought out their back catalogue.
I am interested in anthropology, language development...
...history, science, nature, critical race theory, feminism, human geography, human mental/physical health, cat/dog physiology/care/illness... and a tendency to become obsessed with something which causes me to buy any number of books about it.
Thus, I have a home library.

Thread.
On Tuesday, our house purchase completed and Ian drove to the wrong place to pick up the keys (despite being provided with the postcode). He phoned me from Lincoln and I suggested he download Waze (which I'd told him to do WEEKS ago). He told me he couldn't... 1/
...because he had left his reading glasses in Essex and couldn't see text on his phone.
He put his phone on speaker and I guided him to the estate agent by shouting at him from the cottage in which I was staying with the dogs.
This was not easy. It was dark... 2/
...and pissing with rain, so he couldn't see road signs easily. I was guessing where he was and trying to work out which direction he should head, using Google maps.
He arrived at the estate agents shortly before they closed for the night, and headed to the house... 3/

1/ Context: My husband has 4 degrees, including a doctorate. He is a physicist and teaches in secondary school.
He has been shouting at the TV this morning, which - given that he's far milder-mannered than me - shows how irritated he is.
2/
During discussion on Andrew Marr show, it was stated that the ONS etc had said that there is no evidence that teachers are not more likely to contract Covid.
3/
My husband has pointed out that many teachers have not been in close contact with a lot of children for much of the last year.
From March-July, schools were shut for other than small groups of children.
From July-end August, schools were closed.
