The United Nations recognizes a Filipino group for its efforts to fight disinformation and promote media literacy among the youth.

Nombrado: We started our advocacy organization back in 2014… When we started, we really just trained Filipinos how to watch, films, TV, news more responsibly and critically

Nombrado: But since 2016, we noticed how disinformation, hate speech, propaganda have been all over the media, these call for media and information literacy

Nombrado: It is difficult to turn this thing around and media literacy is just one of many solutions that we have to be considering when dealing with disinformation

Nombrado: We have to talk abut legislation, fact checking, investigative reporting, demanding accountability, and media literacy

Nombrado: Education is a long term commitment so it’s not something that can magically turn things for us but it's something we hope that can make an impact

Nombrado: You have to be very conscious of the media you are consuming… We look at the sources, grammar, relationship between photos and texts

Nombrado: We’ve seen how social media has been used in two previous elections… We know how it can be used for both bad and good

Nombrado: Moving forward, we need media literacy to be more mainstreamed in our educational curriculum and in different institutions
