NEW: In the 1st year of the Biden WH, camaraderie has been fleeting & many teams are suffering from low morale, according to several WH officials. As a result, many are eyeing the exits w/ potential for higher-than-normal turnover next yr

One WH official: "A lot of the natural coordination that happens in a typically functioning White House has been lost, and there has been no proactive effort to make up for it through intentional team building"
It's been so gloomy that these officials said they talked to West Wing Playbook in the hopes it may alert senior leaders to the morale problem among staff
Some attribute it to covid burnout being seen at other workplaces
others say it's the result of an insular Biden circle that are distant from staff--"no new friends in Biden world" goes the quip
others say it's poor management.
And then there are the holiday tours.

On the WH staff frustration, we sent much of this info to the White House press shop. Knowing this is not fully representative of the West Wing, we asked if they had any color on positive morale or team-building exercises. They did not respond.

They’ve been hosting pre-scheduled holiday tours
Per an invitation shared w/ us, even the unvaccinated can attend with a negative PCR test result w/i 48 hours
After the WH announced that a “mid-level” staffer had been w/ Biden and later tested positive, ‘Who has Covid?’ has become something of a grim parlor game among some White House aides with varying theories on the identity of said “mid-level” official

 “Senator Manchin’s comments this morning on FOX are at odds with his discussions this week with the President, with White House staff, and with his own public utterances.”

Tough statement and much more stick than carrot, which departs from their usual approach
More: “If his comments on FOX and written statement indicate an end to that effort, they represent a sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position, and a breach of his commitments to the President and the Senator’s colleagues in the House and Senate.”
More: “Just as Senator Manchin reversed his position on Build Back Better this morning, we will continue to press him to see if he will reverse his position yet again, to honor his prior commitments and be true to his word.”

NEW: Kamala Harris has long felt that Bluetooth headphones are a security risk.
So, she insists on using wired ones, 3 fmr campaign aides told @rubycramer and me.
That Bluetooth phobia remains (if you look closely, you'll see the clump of wires in hand)

Doug, however, is pro-Bluetooth.
Former aides say that VP has long been careful about security — w/ some describing it as prudent & others suggesting it’s a bit paranoid.
A former aide from AG days said when a person arrived for a meeting, staff were instructed not to allow them to wait in Harris' office alone.
