How to tweet with impact for academics: a quick thread 👇
1. Start with why - don’t just throw a random tweet out into the void. Decide your strategy for using Twitter. What are you trying to achieve? How do you want to drive impact? All tweets, timings, hashtags & connections you make must align with these goals.
2. Identify audience. Who do you want to influence? Where do they hang out on Twitter? How can you write tweets that appeal to them? Also, how can you connect & interact with them to start dialogue? Comment on tweets, follow threads, slide into DMs & make your research relevant.
3. Clarify message. DON’T post ‘wrote publication, read it here.’ Make it relevant to problems audience face. Tell us story of why your research is important. Pick out the key takeaways/recommendations for audiences to action. Tweet short, pithy statements with call to action.
4. Use visuals. Tweets with visuals have 170% more article reads than those w/o (Ibrahim, 2017). Create graphical abstracts, infographics or comic strips to bring research to life. How to make these 👉visit @NiftyFoxCreativ blog. Free tools to make them 👉 bit.my/nfc-free-viz
5. Schedule your posts. Have a regular, targeted posting schedule & minimise your time on social media by using a scheduling tool like @hootsuite or @TweetDeck. Could plan your social media month in an hour. Remember to make time to interact & connect with your desired audience.
6. Track your progress. Use the Twitter analytics tool to see what’s working & meaningfully engaging audiences. Do more of that! analytics.twitter.com/about
