man, these guys even *break up* like weedy simps
Coldplay is handling their breakup exactly the way I expected them to: as a piece of legislation they're passing into law but hoping a future Congress will bail them out of before the sunset provision elapses.
Joe Manchin sees through Coldplay's retirement ploy and will not vote for it until and unless it is fully paid-for.
BTW, none of Coldplay was ever any good. Gormless edgeless midwit mush. "Clocks" makes me physically angry, a song destined from the day it was recorded to be the "side effects may result" playout music of an erectile-dysfunction pharmaceutical ad.
In my younger days as an extremely online Radiohead snob (old-schoolers remember), we used to clown endlessly on the two bands held up as potential contemporaries: Coldplay & Muse.

With time I've realized that, whatever else I think of Muse, at least they had real *ambition*.

Kate Bush low-key made some of the most riveting music videos of her era. It's the way she just 100% commits on-screen to every and any premise, regardless of how strange it might be.
People were quick to call it 'pretentiousness' back in the day and I suppose it is, at least in the sense that she takes her ideas seriously. She deserves to, because they're often supremely good ideas.
For example, I don't know how to talk about the song "Cloudbusting" without talking about its fascinating music video (co-starring Donald Sutherland!).

Benjamin Penn (@benjaminpenn) has a lot of nerve attempting to ever show his head above ground ever again without some straight-up penitence for his act of being caught trying to ruin a man's life in public. If Bloomberg wants to keep him that's on them.
A reminder of what @benjaminpenn did. I basically NEVER call for journo's heads--fierce criticism, sure, but I'm not a "fire him!" guy--but Penn should simply not be employed by any reputable organization w/o an honest accounting of what went wrong: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/…
When this all went down back in 2019, I reached out to people who know and work with Penn (it's not hard!) to ask why and to a person their answers rhymed: "he's an activist, it's his cause, and activism is the point if you're in labor journalism." freebeacon.com/politics/bloom…

Instead of going point by point here (because it's obviously intended as rhetoric, not serious geostrategic or diplomatic analysis), I'll just say: like it or not, the Russians *really* do not feel the same way. And their feelings are backed by tanks, infantry, and materiel.
This will obv. be nothing new to Russian history folks, but it really does need to be emphasized that although Putin is doing evil things (I agree there will likely be a hot war in Ukraine soon) the *reasons* he offers are not merely insta-pop propaganda impostures.
The entire Russian national mentality in terms of how it relates to the rest of the world is built around avoiding vulnerability to invasion from the West, from the last few centuries of experience.

The two greatest achievements in man-made terraforming to create metropolises are Venice and Mexico City. Stow your seasteading fantasies and take a look at what happened to Lake Texcoco.

Do the research and tell me I'm wrong.
Simply watch this video and you will understand as you almost certainly never have before (unless, I dunno, you're Mexican) just how radical the alteration from Tenochtitlan to Mexico City was (if you can't speak Spanish, the YEAR is upper-right corner):
God bless my tweeps, because someone mentioned this and I'm appalled at myself for skipping over it: basically the entirety of The Netherlands exists simply because a bunch of peasants kept working up stopgaps to avoid living ankle-deep in saltwater constantly.

On the one hand, this is my Democratic fratricidal fantasy.

On the other hand, beware AOC if she ever runs, fellow right-leaners. Look into a mirror honestly and don't tell yourself "that can't happen here" right after it just did a few years ago in the other direction.
AOC's biggest problem if she ever tried to go national is simple: she's young and pretty.

You might think "oh, those are good things!" Sure. But not for President, where...I mean look at the trend.
AOC's youth/inexperience are massive hurdles to a national (or even statewide run): it would be an acid-test of baseline intelligence and political adaptability. But God help you if she learns Trumpian instincts (i.e. "I'm so strong my nominal party's orthodoxy is tissue to me).

Sonic Youth is the classic example of a band so overpraised by hipsters in the '80s/'90s that you might doubt yourself when listening to them at 1st impression. "Is this crap?" Trust your instincts: it might actually be crap. This, however, is not:
DAYDREAM NATION is one of those (for true music nerd) surprising places where hipster/critic praise and actual revealed truth over time collide perfectly: the snoots were not wrong here. It really is a titanic (singular, really) achievement.
What always sticks w/me about DAYDREAM NATION relative to the rest of Sonic Youth's prior output is how big a leap it was. Henry Rollins famously buttonholed the band after an early performance demoing the songs screaming "YES! THIS IS WHAT I WANT FROM MY SONIC YOUTH!" Correct.
