one of the most obnoxious traits of the “web3” community is labeling existing web experts as “web2 people”. it’s disingenuous because web expertise is usually related to frontend, and “web3” apps, from what i understand, still build UI the same way — HTML, CSS, and JS.
from what i can tell, “web3” is a different approach to building the backend and a different set of values/philosophies. if y’all hope to attract the frontend expertise you desperately need to make your stuff usable, consider not making asses of yourselves by labeling outsiders.
the “web3” branding is, in my opinion, genius and designed to be polarizing. it implies obsolescence and induces FOMO. but it’s just that, a branding. unless you literally reinvent the browser, don’t get too carried away excluding people :)
i think it’s beautiful that someone can put a stake in the ground and say “this — i don’t even know what it is exactly — but something — is what we want the future to be”, and the naming is so triggering that hordes of developers argue over the term. web3 brand is a work of art.
web3 is a movement — a subculture, a community. but web 2.0 is not a movement, subculture or community — it’s just a label media attached to the more dynamic internet sites around 2004. so “web 2.0 personality” is a meaningless term but now we have to live with it. oh well.
if we forgive the occasional obnoxiousness, parts of “web3” and crypto are cute. people will throw things against the wall to see what sticks, so it’ll be overdone and undeservedly hyped for a while. i don’t think it’s all vain so i (a web2 personality) am watching w/ curiosity!
