Huge news for Water Protectors: the Hawai‘i Department of Health’s state hearing officer ruled against the Navy and supports the Governor’s Emergency Order to Defuel the Decrepit, Leaking Red Hill Fuel Tanks!
Here are a few key takeaways on the hearing officer’s determinations:
- Navy’s contamination crisis is a “humanitarian and environmental disaster”.
- The fuel leaks and ensuing crisis “constitute an imminent peril to human health and safety” and to “the environment”.
- Red Hill Facility is a “ticking timebomb located 100 feet above the most important aquifer on Hawai‘i’s most populous island.”
- “The Navy lacks the ability to control the substantial risks associated with the Red Hill Facility, as currently situated.” The words “as currently situated” arguably goes further than the Gov’s Emergency Order to defuel, implying the entire location in Kapūkaki is perilous.
- The Navy “is not reliable with respect to monitoring whether leaks are occurring, determining how much fuel is released into the environment when leaks occur, and ascertaining threats”.
- Over 76 fuel leaks that we know of (!!!)
- 96% chance of 1,000-30,000 gallon release over next 10 years
- Red Hill Facility has reached its “end of life” phase
- The problems with the Red Hill Facility are systemic and “beyond the Navy’s ability to control”. #ShutDownRedHill
Water contamination was substantiated by testimony from folks like Kim Charters and other video evidence - “perhaps the most important to the overall factual balancing in a finding that the November 2021 Release caused a humanitarian and environmental emergency and disaster.”
Mahalo to all who have joined the fight to #ShutDownRedHill. The Navy will likely appeal this decision but now they’ll be doing so in order to defend the existence of something the DOH describes as a direct threat to our health and safety! The struggle continues.
The Navy drops another major bombshell on ‘News Dump’ Friday. They claim that the Red Hill Facility is in such dangerously deteriorated state that they could need up to two years worth of repairs and an entire year after to ‘safely’ defuel. Unacceptable. civilbeat.org/2022/05/consul…
Just months ago top Navy officials told the public that there was absolutely no need to defuel Red Hill - in fact, they sued the state government to avoid it. Look at the actual state of the facility with those blatant lies in mind.
The Navy’s own “Tank Upgrade & Analysis Report” from 2019 claimed they could safely defuel each of the 20 Red Hill tanks within 36hrs. Their new timeline gives them three years or more - while our precious aquifer and all life on O'ahu continue to hang in the balance.
This is what Pu'uloa (Pearl Harbor) looks like after the @USNavy flushed millions of gallons of water through their fuel-contaminated water lines out into the sea in an effort to clear the pipes. #shutdownredhill
This is what the same water looked like in June of 2021, several months before the catastrophic leak from the Navy’s Red Hill fuel facility in late-November that was the most likely cause of water contamination that poisoned thousands of people on O'ahu.
The US Military has described this as an "iterative" process that will likely continue until all their water tests come up "clean". They initially flushed UNTREATED water in direct defiance of Department of Health orders. Now it's presumably being treated.
It’s time to set the record straight: the US Military is the "greatest purveyor of violence in the world today".
The @USNavy wants desperately to whitewash and co-opt Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy for their own agenda. We cannot and will not allow them to do that.
What the @USNavy, @SecDef, @SECNAV, and @USNavyCNO don’t want you to know about MLK was that in addition to being a Civil Rights leader, he was also a socialist and anti-imperialist.
It is particularly egregious for the Navy to invoke Dr. King’s name on all their social media platforms whilst continuing to prioritize imperialist interests over the people of O‘ahu, whose water they contaminated with toxic fuel from their corroding fuel tanks on Red Hill.
Reminder that the events leading to the Red Hill fuel contamination crisis flows directly through the history of the @cochawaii Military Affairs Council’s stonewalling in the state legislature.#ShutDownRedHill#ShutDownChamberofCommerce
The @BWSHonolulu should cancel this @cochawaii-hosted “informational briefing”. The Chamber of Commerce should have nothing to do with informing people on the crisis, and they should have nothing to do with how we as a community proceed with respect to the Red Hill fuel facility.
HAPPENING NOW
HASC Subcommittee on Readiness Hearing: “Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility: The Current Crisis, the Response, and the Way Forward” armedservices.house.gov/2022/1/subcomm…
From the get, it's immediately clear through Admiral Converse's testimony that their plan is to "remediate" the Red Hill facility in order to "bring it back online". They have zero intention to #ShutDownRedHill.
It's also becoming increasingly clear, as we suspected, that the recent report to beltway media that later trickled in to local media news outlets was a direct message to the House Armed Services Committee in the lead up to this Subcommittee Hearing washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
🚨BREAKING🚨 The U.S. Navy confirmed it will comply with the Department of Health order to turn in a plan within 30 days outlining how they plan to REMOVE the hundreds of millions of gallons of fuel still stored in the Red Hill facility!
THIS ISN'T OVER - not by a long shot. The @USNavy will likely continue to drag their feet on defueling AND will try to "fix" the Red Hill Facility. As we know, the entire Red Hill fuel storage system is beyond repair. We will continue to demand they permanently #ShutDownRedHill
Mahalo to everyone around the world who contributed your voices and your mana to this growing movement to protect water. We still need you. The US Military and the ruling class will use this moment to try to lull us into complacency. For wai's sake, we can't allow that to happen.
