1/ “So authentic! So sincere! He’s not a politician! He’s for real!” That’s what 30-40% of the country has been saying about Donald John Trump for the past 6+ years.
2/ I grant that Trump does have a great destructive power. He has single-handedly detonated the moral implosion of the GOP & threatens to end our Democracy. But he is not sincere. He is, as we all can see, a compulsive liar. How then does he carry off the appearance of sincerity?
3/ As usual, the answer lies within the word itself.
4/“Sincerity” is a combination of two Latin words: “Sine” is Latin for “without” and “ceres” is Latin for wax. So sincerity means “without wax.” What’s up with that? It all has to do with the appearance of statues.
5/Back in the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome, statues were a big deal. Lots of the “better people” wanted marble statues. But they were fairly delicate. Often legs or arms or heads got knocked off.
6/They discovered that you could do a quick fix with hot wax. It wouldn’t hold for a long time, but for a while it looked really good.
7/ So “sincerity” means: the statue is without wax, without some hidden fault, a sculpture that is not a combination of marble and wax.
8/Donald is not sincere. He’s just wax. There’s no marble, no core to him at all, nothing to break. If the heat of truth and of light gets focussed on his being, he just melts and shape-shifts....
9/...Grifting along, defying the law, grabbing what money he can, Donald poses: Great student at elite schools!! Business Tycoon! Big TV Star! Stunning Politician! Greatest President of All Time!!
