Back in 2004 Graphic novels were starting to really come into the book market hard, from Marvel to DC and of course manga, one indie comic stood out in that crowd and became a major read at the time.

See Scott wasn't really doing anything TOO new in comics, like Watchmen itself did have predecessors like a lot of the humor in Scott Pilgrim being very GAMER based was novel at the time for comics because for a while it was really only done in webcomics.

But Scott also brought that to regular comics, see these types of Indie books were kind of a signal of a new generation of comic creators, again for better or for worse, it wasn't depressing like Dan Clowes, but very much a indie book you would give to teens.

Like I said a lot about Scott book you could find in webcomics from the time, from the very unique semi fantasy world and very reference heavy world but it wasn't that mainstream yet.

One of the most IMPORTANT aspects about why Scott did so well, it adopted a manga like format for it's first run, this cheap version made it easy to buy and also allowed a manga fanbase to check it out growing it's fanbase.

and I think it's important to note that the current YA boom in comics is thanks to a large part in Scott, he kind of laid the ground work for a older YA Gn series that many in Tumblr would try to copy in some respects.

Scott also had an effect on other media, no joke but if you were or knew about the critical comic scene at the time this was passed around and well influenced creators, even O'Malliey has commented on it.

The reason I compare Scott to Watchmen is mostly because of how it changed comics in my lifetime, I don't think it had as big an influence but it's hard to deny that it didn't, and many people took good lessons and bad lessons from it. Scott for better or for worse....

is the Watchmen I got for my generation of comics fandom, I saw the world change because of it, and now wonder if somehow Diary of a Wimpy Kid will be that book for some young comics fan.
