For the last day of December I'm going to do a #threadapalooza! on mistakes I made this year and how to do better next year.
1) Twitter - I think my engagement on here has been all over the place this year and I need to decide why I'm here and adjust accordingly
2) #threadapalooza! - I wanted to do this since it was announced this year, but had a hard time finding a topic I felt comfortable with (not even sure I did), so now I'm doing in on the last day.
3) Guard your yes - I got into too many things this year cause I failed to heed this. Some are still biting me, some are enjoyable but I should have been more strategic in saying Yes.
4) Understanding my motivation - This was a tough question and thinking it over I realize I never really consider the WHY I want to do X. If I did I think I would be more likely to complete things and be better at selecting what to pass on.
5) Looking forward to @visakanv Introspect (which I have pre-ordered) to help provide some more framework for thinking through my motivations.
6) Supporting Creators Financially - I see people doing great things, but spend relatively little of my play money supporting these. Need to put more of my $ here in the future.
7) When I spend $ on things I am usually only mildly happy, but the few creator projects I've bought into I get much more enjoyment /$.
8) Doing what makes me happy - Often I think I'd be happier going for a hike, but spend the day at home browsing random internet. Need to just push myself out the door and do the things I want. There are minimal barriers to doing so other than my internal thoughts.
9) More Water sports - Bought a paddleboard and acquired 2 kayaks this year, and didn't use them enough. Similar to #8, just need to make a plan and stick to it (once it is warmer).
10) Just Do It! - Got my son a skateboard this summer and had fun showing him how to use it. Wanted to get my own, but for some reason waited until Dec to get one and now the weather is horrible. Need to recognize these things and just do it and enjoy instead of waiting.
11) Part of the reason I didn't buy my own skateboard earlier was some idea that I'm too old. Need to remember that we all need play and should find enjoyment in things we like regardless of anyone's opinion of age appropriateness.
12) Fix things sooner - My Truck has been out of commission for months because I failed to take it in, even though I knew I could not fix it. This resulted it in having additional problems from sitting so long.
13) Bad news ages poorly, and so do broken things. Get them fixed when you notice.
14) Had a big argument with my wife as we were looking at an opportunity and applying differing tests to see if we should proceed. Need to remember that other people approach thing differently and ask them how they are assessing something.
15) Fitness - 2021 was supposed to be my Year of Fitness, but I never made any real progress. Going to refocus on this soon with two key changes: Remember that the journey is more important than the destination and that a little work every day is much better than...
16) a big plan that never gets off the ground.
17) So the plan going forward is to pick one each day: Yoga, weights, biking or a long walk. and Do that EVERY DAY!
18) Reading - I set a goal to read 18 books this year, but only read 12. Better than last year, but not as good as I had hoped. Part of that is because:
19) Watch too much TV. Need to just not sit down with it as much. The time freed up can be used for more reading, late night work (freeing up day time for more fun) and exercise.
20) I am my own worst critic- I did some amazing things this year, but when it came to Threadapalooza! all I could think of was my failures. Did a good job at work writing down positive things people say about me, just need to extend that to my personal life.
21) Writing down positive feedback came from a @nataliepidding comment in one of @mattdavella's videos.
22) Based on #20 I'm going to pull the plug on this thread, cause one thing I am good at is realizing when a idea (book, movie, plan) no longer works and not being tortured to finish it by the Sunk Cost Fallacy.
23) If you made it this far, thanks for coming on the journey and hope you found something useful here to apply in 2022!
