Happy Public Domain Day! Your present? Winnie the Pooh. The first book is in the public domain today. You can share, copy and remix. Plus you get Bambi, The Sun Also Rises, Langston Hughes first poems and 400k sound recordings! web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdom…
We need Pooh right now, just like we needed Ted Lasso. We need kindness and modesty and the desire to help. Did you forget to be kind to someone in 2021? Fix it. Now. Pooh did.
But the public domain teaches us more than kindness. The sound recordings are full of songs arguing for women’s suffrage — like “She’s Good Enough to Be Your Baby’s Mama and She’s Good Enough to Vote With You” Preach! archeophone.com/arsc-top-ten-n…
The Poohniverse is an $80 Billion(!) franchising empire. Can Disney use trademarks to take away the freedoms the public domain confers? Jennifer Jenkins has answered that question for you. web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdom…
Pooh is famous. But (C) term extension means much culture is simply lost; the films crumble, the songs unheard, the pictures lost. Meanwhile the US & UK pressure other countries to extend (C) too! A bear of very little brain could see what a tragedy that is. @mchl_wolfe
