2022 begins with a strong likelihood that democracy in America will be significantly weakened by year's end--through voting restrictions, a right wing dominated Supreme Court that is becoming ever more radicalized and politicized, and likely GOP wins in November.
Should DoJ not hold coup plotters accountable, not act in the few weeks that remain to pursue the Mueller obstruction charges against Trump, that will compound the crisis by increasing Trump's sense of impunity.
Roe will die this year. Common sense gun restrictions will be limited. The ability of the executive branch to manage everything from pandemics to the climate crisis may well be weakened.
All these things are not inevitable. But resisting them will require a degree of focus, clarity and fight from pro-democracy, pro-justice Americans that we have seldom seen. Voting rights must be preserved. The filibuster must be reformed.
The president and the Democrats must turn up the volume and turn up the heat framing the choice between the and the GOP. Cash and energy must be directed at midterm elections Democrats must win to maintain Congressional majorities.
The scorched earth, Constitution-be-damned tactics of Republicans must be met not just with better values and better ideas on the part of Democrats but with tactics that exhaust every legal option in order to win and end this threat.
COVID will not make this easier--and we must take the strongest possible steps to ensure the public health and combat the politicization of the response which has turned red state residents with science-denying leaders into those who are suffering disproportionately.
The climate crisis will continue & we all must do what we can to drive solutions because governments have already proven they will do too little. Global crises will demand attention & we must stand up to threats while also resisting attempts to draw us into new costly conflicts.
Sorry to start the year with a list of worries. But facing them squarely is the only way that we can have a chance to end the year on a higher note, with better prospects for the future of the planet and our country than we face right now.

Agree with this. Making corporations and billionaires pay taxes should be a central priority of Biden this year. So should standing up to Big Tech (including anti-trust legislation). People believe Biden cares about the average person. They need to know he will fight for them.
If I were making Biden's New Year's resolutions (after a very good first year in office), I would suggest he resolve not just to be strong but to communicate his strength--and note that the best way to communicate strength is to be strong.
Related: Every day this year, Biden needs to send the message that the November elections are not just "the midterms." They represent an existential choice for our democracy pitting Dems vs. a GOP that seeks to gut our system and disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans.

I feel your contempt & loathing for Manchin. He's earned it. I've been seething all morning. It's far from the first time he has me feeling this way. But justified as our disgust & anger is, I'm not sure they're constructive. A thread on why hating him is right but not enough...
First, railing at what a heartless, corrupt, hypocritical, jackass Manchin is wont change anything. And if you're angry at him for the right reasons-which is seeking a better life for Americans in need, protecting democracy, etc.-the real issue isn't him. He's not going away.
He's part of a political reality for now in which just one intransigent, ignorant, greedy, yacht-residing, motherfucker of a "Democrat" can ally himself w/50 similarly craven, cold-hearted, power-hungry, one percent-serving, conscienceless Republicans to control our Senate.

Just finished a great special edition of @DeepStateRadio featuring a debate about the whether Big Tech may someday supplant the power of nation states and how. It features @ianbremmer and @stephenWalt.
The debate is based on this article from Ian: foreignaffairs.com/articles/world…
And this article from Steve: foreignpolicy.com/2021/11/08/big…

Lotta folks saying "Hey, the way prosecutors work is in secret, so if we are hearing nothing of an investigation of Trump for 1/6 or obstruction, that means things are working just as they should." Um, no. It could mean that, of course. Or the opposite.
Some folks are saying that investigating Trump's wrongdoing should take time. And of course, that's true. Except...a number of people, including the FBI Director and Rep. Adam Schiff have indicated they don't believe such an investigation is taking place.
Further, the fact that it takes time to do an investigation does not in any way offset the fact that we have a limited amount of time. First, time elapsed investigating coup planners has already strengthened belief in the Big Lie and the justifications for 1/6 offered by the GOP.

The Omicron outbreak reminds us that for nearly two years now, the dominant battle confronting the US, our allies (and our enemies) worldwide has been against the virus. It has taken a massive economic, social, political toll...one so big, we don't even understand it fully.
And...until we win the war against COVID-19...which involves not eradicating it but learning how to manage it, it will continue to set our priorities and make progress on most other issues impossible. It will also influence political outcomes and business profoundly.
The message to governments needs to be that they must work together better than they have, invest in a global "solution" (way to manage it), and use all available measures to overcome anti-science forces who delay and jeopardize recovery.

In my latest for @TheDailyBeast, I talk to experts on the (apparent) pace of DoJ's investigations into Trump and the coup plotters...and into Trump's wrong-doing more broadly. While I agree with them that more patience is in order...
...it is also a fact that delaying action for too long could have grievous consequences. Should the GOP win in November, all congressional investigations will be shutdown and obstacles will be thrown in the path of investigators.
Should investigations get to close to 2024 elections, DoJ principles will suggest decisions/actions be postponed...especially in the wake of the Comey fiasco re: HRC. Further, and perhaps more importantly...
