Democratic politics requires building coalitions.
Building coalitions requires compromise, patience, forbearance.
Social media is the space where much political organizing happens these days.
Social media fosters the exact opposite of compromise, patience, and forbearance.
Thanks for coming to my depressing-as-hell Ted Talk.
That said, "social media" is an ever changing thing that is not homogenous. It contains multitudes. It is not inevitable that "social media" will contribute to the collapse of democratic polities (such as they exist today).
But I think it's also important for people who care about democracy to be out doing things in the world besides posting online (he says on Twitter, I know, I know). There's no substitute for real-world, in person organizing.
But that doesn't mean we should stop thinking about how we can make social media technology more democracy-sustaining and less democracy-corroding.

Just read an article about conservative students in Texas secretly taping their "subversive" professors who are trying to "brainwash" them. Same article talked about "middle class patriots" trying to ban books & control curriculum in public schools.
Article is from October 1964.
Here's the full article if you want to read it. It's a fascinating window into an earlier moment when the American far right was highly energized, especially at the local level. commentary.org/articles/willi…
The context for that story was the 1964 nomination of self-described "right wing extremist" Barry Goldwater as GOP candidate. A month after this piece was published Goldwater got shellacked by LBJ, thus creating the (false) impression that right wing extremism had been squashed.

One of my first experiences of being swarmed by the angry fascist followers of a MAGA social media influencer involved this guy pointing them my way back in 2018. The swarm died down after I blocked a few hundred people (including him), but it was (and still is) pretty sobering.
Most of the fascist accounts I ended up blocking were not bots. They were MAGA accounts run by real people (though almost always hiding behind avatars) with between 5 and 30K real, angry followers who they knew they could weaponize just by saying the right words.
The majority of those trolls were pathetic keyboard warriors who just took pleasure in threatening a professor with violence, a good number of whom took particular pleasure in pointing out my Jewishness while wishing me harm.

My experience growing up in a small PA town in the 70s & 80s was that the kids with the most controlling and strict parents (in regard to reading material, alcohol, drugs, sex) engaged in much more "forbidden" behavior than the kids who had more laid back parents.
In other words, the whole "parents rights" thing that is metastasizing so quickly on the right these days is part of a long-running fools errand to control what maturing young people do with their minds and their bodies, when loving and trusting them often has better results.
Generational conflict/tension/difference is just a given in modern societies like ours, whether we like it or not. The idea that it can be avoided by banning books or micromanaging how history gets taught in high schools is silly.

The thing you all need to understand is that Joe Biden is a dangerous Communist who is on the verge of destroying America, AND a senile old man who can barely stay awake or complete a sentence.
Oh, and once you understand how that makes logical sense, can you please explain it to me?
Props to Joe Biden for playing the long game, serving in DC for 5 decades pretending to be a mild mannered moderate, all the while waiting for his chance to go FULL COMMUNISM in 2021.

Does this conservative think this is a dunk on Fauci? Because I suspect he'd say "Yeah, duh, you were far more likely to have a mild case BECAUSE you're triple vaxxed." ImageImage
My first thought is, "yes, we could all be much closer to being 'over this' if only so many influential conservatives didn't give so much air to anti-vaccine and anti-science BS."
Also tweeted today. Here’s hoping, for the sake of the other people at that bar, that she really is “over this,” in an epidemiological sense. ImageImage

It’s important to remember the massive propaganda campaign that led up to January 6. First they were willing to say, then they were willing to do, just about anything to illegally retain power. No reason to expect different in the future, given the lack of contrition.
All political actors strive to maximize their power. And also they, at certain points, decide where the lines are that they can’t or voluntarily won’t cross. A political party that respects no legal or ethical lines that might limit their actions is a very dangerous one.
Rush Limbaugh and then Fox were "proof of concept" for the idea that a conservative media outlet could be as bitterly angry, conspiratorial, and empirically-challenged as they wanted so long as they ginned up votes for Republicans. Trump just took it to the next level.
