NYC is averaging 40k+ covid cases/day. Over 4,500 are hospitalized, and that # is now growing faster than at any point since Mar, 2020.
We need to act now to slow this wave, protect our hospitals, and support the sick.
Here 👇are 16 concrete steps NYC should take now. 🧵
1. Clear messaging to the public that the next two weeks are a time to avoid large gatherings, work from home if possible, and generally limit in-person social activities.
2. Offer strong guidance to the public that use of cloth masks is no longer advised. Distribute free, high-quality masks (kf94 or higher) in communities throughout the city.
3. Extend mask mandates to fitness establishments, indoor entertainment and all indoor gathering places, regardless of vaccination status.
4. Define being fully vaccinated as having been boosted. Announce a date by which this new standard must be met for those working in healthcare and nursing homes.
5. Set up a system (via web, phone and text message) to sign up to receive free rapid tests mailed to your home, as has been done in many other parts of the nation and world.
6. Offer strong guidance to the public about the importance of ventilation (e.g. opening windows and doors wherever possible), and provide HEPA filters to low-income families who have poorly ventilated homes.
7. Urge the federal gov’t to require vaccination and a negative test for all domestic flights.
8. Create multi-service FEMA centers at Javits, the Washington Heights Armory and other hubs in the five boroughs, to provide testing, vaccination, and connection to care for those who test positive (e.g. referrals for monoclonal antibodies)
9. Allow those City workers who can do their jobs from home the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule, at least during the omicron surge.
10. Institute a plan for weekly testing of all students & staff in DOE schools, whether vax'd or not. Require that parents opt-out if they don’t want their child tested. Offer regular on-site vaccination at all DOE elementary schools, with schedule set out in advance.
11. Establish a web portal for New Yorkers to register positive results from home self-test kits, helping the City collect better data and making it easier for those NYers to access supportive services.
12. Secure supply for NYC hospitals of Sotrovimab, the new formulation of monoclonal antibodies that work for omicron.
13. Double the number of mobile vaccination vans and deploy in neighborhoods with low rates of boosters
14. Dramatically expand staffing for the 212-COVID19 call center to reduce wait time for requesting supportive services to isolate at home or in a hotel.
15. Double the number of hotel rooms available in NYC’s covid isolation program
16. Shorten turn-around time for PCR results (now as much as 5-7 days at some sites), by among other things surging resources to NYC’s Pandemic Response Lab.
If you have covid, NYC will provide a whole menu of services to help you safely isolate at home.
==> Meal delivery, Rx, medical check-ins, mental health support, pet services etc
After you test positive you'll get a call from a contact tracer who will set you up w/ services. 1/
If you test positive NYC will offer to send you a "take care" package with masks, hand sanitizer, a thermometer, pulse oximeter, etc. 2/
To access supportive services, it is important that you answer the call from the contact tracer. Their calls show one of the following on caller ID:
* NYC Test+Trace
* NYC Covid Test
* A # beginning w/ 212-540-XXXX or 212-242-XXXX

With all the noise about covid policy right now, this is what we can't take our eyes off:
Cases are rising sharply in NYC. Already higher than our summer peak.
If you haven't been vax'd, do it NOW
If you are eligible for booster, get it NOW
Keep masking, testing, ventilating.
Hospitalizations are also rising in NYC, in a healthcare system where hospital workers are exhausted and in short supply. We have to take this seriously.
Welcome signs of a late summer plateau in covid in NYC. (Although still at very high levels)
We need to keep pushing hard to avoid a fall surge.
Get vax'd. Wear a mask indoors. Get tested. Stay safe.
Less welcome trend: after a significant increase in vaccination earlier in the summer, the daily number of first does in NYC is falling again. Can't overstate how important it is that we turn this around.
Also plateauing in NYC: testing.
Increasing testing further will be a critical piece of our battle to prevent a fall surge. (Remember, even if you're vax'd, you should still get tested if you are exposed or have symptoms.)
NEW: NYC Dept of Health has just published major analysis of breakthrough cases in NYC.
Key take-aways:
* Breakthrough cases, while still uncommon, have increased due to Delta.
* Vaccination still dramatically improves your odds, especially in avoiding hospitalization.
NYC data shows that since January (through to Aug 7):
Starting today, a major new measure takes effect to slow the Delta surge in NYC:
==> Everyone aged 12+ is now required to show proof of vaccination for indoor dining, fitness, and entertainment.
Here are answers to some questions on how this works. 1/
Why is this necessary?
* Covid is surging in NYC. Since July, daily cases are up 10x & hospitalizations are up almost 5x. Restricting key indoor venues to people who are vax’d will make them far safer. And it will give an added incentive to those on the fence to get their vax. 2/
Where will this apply?
* The program, called #KeyToNYC, will apply to staff and patrons at a wide variety of indoor establishments: 3/
==> City-run vax sites in NYC begin offering 3rd doses of Pfizer/Moderna to immunocompromised NYers. Via walk-in and appointment.
Here are some answers to questions about how this works. 1/
Who is eligible for a third dose?
* Below is a partial list of qualifying conditions. When in doubt, check with your doctor about whether you should get a 3rd dose. 2/
Do I need documentation to show I have a qualifying medical condition?
* No. It's via self-attestation.
