1/🧵 How to market yourself.
The basics. A guide for new #NFTartists
This is the first thread of a series I plan to post, going from the basics to the more complex aspects of marketing.
2/ Twitter bio & pictures.
Extremely important!
When someone visits your profile you've got ~3 seconds to convince them to give you a follow. Make it clear who you are and what you do.
3/ A picture of yourself will make you more relatable. People like being able to put a face on your name and know who they're talking to. If you wanna stay anonymous your art works too.
4/ Don't post nudity in your profile picture or header. It violates Twitter rules and will get you permanently banned from Twitter. You won't be allowed to create new accounts either.
5/ Your Twitter header/banner should ideally show some of your art, but if all your art contains nudity like mine does, a picture that says more about yourself as an artist works too. Never post nudity in your Twitter header either!
6/ Bio: You need an elevator pitch! A sentence or two to describe your work, catch people's interest and make you stand apart from the rest. Mine is: 'I paint surreal worlds inhabited by elongated figures focusing on the beauty of the female form.'
7/ Let's analyze it:
'I paint surreal worlds' = 2D artist, surreal art, painter.
'inhabited by elongated figures' = signature style, common themes, common subjects in my art
'focusing on the beauty of the female form' = goal, meaning of my work.
8/ This elevator pitch will also help you define your style and brand - yes, brand, YOU are a brand now!
What does that mean? You sell something and people expect a consistent output from you.
9/ Let's make an analogy. You are a musician and love rock music. You start a band. But you also love classical music, hip hop, country and reggae.
10/ If one day you play rock, the next country, one song is hip hop, the next reggae, you can't expect to have a fanbase. If I buy tickets to your concert I wanna know what to expect. Maybe I hate reggae and only listen to rock. How can I love your band?
11/ Visual art is the same. Fans become fans because they fall in love with a specific set of things that make your art unique. These are your themes, subjects, motifs, medium, rendering style and everything that makes your art yours.
12/ If they don't know what to expect from you, you can be a great artist but you won't have fans. That's why your brand needs to be clear to both you and your audience.
13/ Like with music, one genre is not intrinsically better than the other but people have preferences. Your fans will be the people who share the same preferences you do. That is your style, and also your brand.
14/ Of course, your band could play an unique mix of all those genres and thus making your style even more recognizable, but it shouldn't play one genre one song and another one the next.
15/ Your style/brand can and should evolve and mature but there should be a thread that ties it all together. The transition should be smooth and the entirety of your work should look as if it were created by the same person.
16/ Ok, so you have pictures and a bio and these cover the first 3 seconds of marketing to a potential fan or collector. What's next?
17/ Name! Maybe it's a bit late to change your name but if you're just starting out your name should be something easy to remember and easy to read and write.
18/ You may be proud of your cultural heritage but an artist name with an international audience should be easy to read and be remembered by anyone.
19/ It can be your name, a derivative of your name, or something completely made up. My artist name is a combination of my surname and family name: Cami Cuibus. I mixed them together, took out the middle part and what I got was Camibus.
20/ It's pretty unique and if you search it on Google (after it tries to search for Canibus instead) you can find me. Always look for names that don't bring a million other results before they get to you.
21/ Anything else for a good first impression?
Add links to your work - make it easy for people to find out about you. Set up a linktree to your social media accounts, marketplaces, portfolio, etc. If you're not transparent about who you are I'm going to assume the worst.
22/ Don't make people work for it. People are busy. They should be able to check your links and your work and see if you're a legit artist in under 10 seconds. They wanna see what you've created, how long you've created, how dedicated you are to your career.
23/ If it doesn't look like you're taking this seriously, neither will they. If you don't put effort in this, neither will they. First impressions count so make sure you've got an immaculate one.
24/ This thread was all about first impressions but there's a lot more to marketing. It's long enough though and I'll be covering the rest in a future thread. Stay awesome and see you next time! 💪

1/ My year in #NFTs. What I've learned. 🤓
A thread 🧵
I want to share with you my journey, the good, the bad and the incredible. Hope it will inspire you and convince you to keep going even when times are rough.
2/ I first heard about #NFTs in January and sold my first piece in March. I went from being a nobody to feeling that I matter and it's all because of this amazing community.
3/ It's sad to see that outsiders think #NFTs are sexist, empty, hateful or a scam. I've met the kindest, most generous people here - people that have supported and believed in me even though they had just met me and had no interest to do so.
