After an interrogation, investigators said “Ladd” was actually Ricardo César Guedes, a 49-year-old who owned a home, got married, bought a BMW, took out a loan and worked as a flight attendant, including 40 trips for United in 2020 — all in Ladd’s name.

A review of local prosecutions reveals Guedes is among several defendants accused of playing the long game, spending years constructing a fake identity based on a pile of real documents that belong to someone else. houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…
The particulars of local prosecutions shed light on the complexities and cruelties of passport fraud, a crime that has become far more difficult to pull off as official IDs become increasingly high tech. houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…
🗣️Nicholas Porter with @StateDeptDSS says con artists can’t just paste a photo into an existing passport like the old days. Instead, they have to build their way to a fake identity over time.

As for why they do this, the reasons are various: Some use it to conceal their true identity, gain access to a coveted profession or try to reap the benefits of citizenship.

“Jesus was not broke,” said Pastor Ben Priest of River of God Church. “He was born a king, and he left this planet a king.” Priest is putting that lesson into practice at home — literally.

Like the spacious and often luxurious abodes of dozens of Texas ministers of the gospel — as well as Hindu gurus to secretive Catholic lay groups — the house Priest and his wife have lived in for years is a tax-exempt “parsonage.”

In many places across Texas, clergy residences are extravagant estates nestled in the most exclusive enclaves. But unlike their wealthy neighbors, they don't pay taxes.

Most people know that religious organizations pay no property taxes on their houses of worship. Lesser known is that many also get a valuable break on clergy homes or "parsonages" too.
houstonchronicle.com/news/investiga…
The word “parsonage” conjures images of humble, spartan rooms attached to drafty churches. A few still are.

But others are spacious and well-appointed homes with immaculate grounds, tennis courts, swimming pools, decorative fountains and serene grottos. houstonchronicle.com/news/investiga…

16 years ago, @JeffBezos announced @BlueOrigin would use a tiny West Texas town to launch people into space. Today, the quiet community of Van Horn is again the center of global attention as Bezos heads to the stars.

@blueorigin's logo, a feather, represents freedom, perfect flight design & gentle landings. Around town, the silver feathers the company handed out has come to represent all the ways Bezos has changed their community - for good and bad.

Like @SpaceX, Bezos' company has brought money to the town it occupies. Workers eat at local restaurants, buy houses and have become involved in Van Horn's school and museum. houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…

When @elonmusk tweeted his legions of fans (and haters) to move to/and or near Starbase in South Texas, no one was really prepared for what came next. Not local officials and certainly not residents.

Downtown Brownsville received $10M from Musk, which the city hopes to use to spur even more investment. Real estate prices have also skyrocketed: The average home in Brownsville is now $212K, up 47 percent from last year.
