I don't spend much time on LinkedIn but every now and then I check it out. Up til ~ 5 years ago, I worked mostly in clean energy/utility/climate policy & related fields. I came to housing as a natural outgrowth of that -- it's the key missing link in climate policy, bar none.
So I'm always shocked to go catch up on some LinkedIn threads and see the number of clean energy professionals who are just totally hardcore NIMBYs -- almost always, wealthy, white, suburban professionals who are all in on solar but think zoning reform is a neoliberal conspiracy.
I know, "not all solar advocates," there are *plenty* who are all-in on urban infill, density, transit, etc.

But entirely too many think climate action is only the stuff that doesn't require you to accommodate any change whatsoever in your neighborhood.

This is a problem.
things you say when your concern is really, truly climate change and not, oh, "protecting the character of your neighborhood"

One year ago today, Confederate traitors prepared to rekindle a war they never stopped fighting.

White Americans who’ve never been exposed to real red-state/American Taliban sentiment tend to not believe those of us who’ve lived/seen it.

They’ve been gaslighting us 30 years.
In 1989 I moved to Colorado Springs from Washington, DC for school. My childhood was purely progressive: Protests against apartheid at the South African embassy; constant protests against Reagan’s “friendly fascism” — I thought that was what America was like.
Landing in Colorado Springs was like diving into a cold plunge. The largest Christianist indoctrination centers were there, training a generation of violent fundamentalists to hate un-Christianist, unwhite, female, and LGBTQ Americans. They were very active in the community.

One thing you can say about white people who live in segregated, car-oriented neighborhoods is, since they only see white people on bicycles, they think only white people ride bicycles.
This is called the availability heuristic and it is a classic error of judgment.
One thing I learned this week is origin of "punish passing" was actually during height of Jim Crow, when car culture first caught on -- rich white teenagers in their new cars would run Black bicycle delivery workers off the road.

This is still a sanctioned activity in e.g. NYC

Them: "There's no more room here for housing, people have to go somewhere else"

Us: [points to 85-acre freeway interchange built with tax dollars on land stolen from Black/brown owners and given to car industry]

Them: "That's, uh, ours, we ... uh, we stole it fair and square."
Us: “Pardon us while we steal it the fuck back.”
Like, here’s tens of thousands of acres of free public land that also requires hundreds of billions of dollars in annual tax revenues for maintenance.

Remove the cars, put up public housing, have BILLIONS OF DOLLARS LEFTOVER

I remember that time a pedestrian followed another pedestrian home for standing on the wrong side of the escalator and also shot them to death, this is just a part of being human that can't be avoided
I was once cut off by a cyclist at a stop sign and found them via face recognition technology, went to their house, and poured rat poison in their main water supply. as one does
It's pretty obvious that most Americans have no idea what is being done to their brain chemistry by the hormones released during the physical experience of horsepower, rapid acceleration, and rapid deceleration.

But yes, it turns you into a violent psychopath.

"you'll never get Americans out of their cars" perhaps, but might not be necessary, cars are well on their way to driving Americans out of their minds
I'm increasingly curious which will hit first: The deadly heat waves from car pollution that will wipe e.g. Vegas/Phoenix off the map, or a scale of gridlock traffic never before seen by humans that ... causes open warfare on the streets and wipes Vegas/Phoenix off the map.

Given the direction of car industry, it would be useful IMO to develop a suite of technologies pedestrians & other uncarred humans can use to disable/otherwise neutralize the deadly weaponry they’re building into products.

For example, a Skydio follow-drone w/ grenade launcher.
If a violent drivist — whether robotic or human — gets within a defined perimeter, the drone sends a warning text message: “You have 1 second to cease operations” and then fires a grenade to protect its owner.

Other drone solutions could include EM pulse guns to shut down motors
or, for crowd protection, larger drones mounted with detachable spike strips.

I’m resistant to the idea of pedestrians arming ourselves for defense, only because, just as most drivers are not qualified to drive, most walkers can’t and likely don’t want to wield a weapon.
