Today I was thinking about my university’s equality, diversity, and inclusion workshop, where I learned we shouldn’t hire the best person for the job if that person happened to be #shomershabbos . Classic case of #jewsdontcount@Baddiel
I’m really pleased to say this tweet made it to the head of staff inclusion, who informed me that @BristolUni has ceased using this awful training (an external product used by many universities).
I also want to say that despite this generic external training, on the ground, I have been very well supported. I asked not to teach in person on Friday afternoons because I have a very long commute and the sun sets very early in the winter.
I was immediately accommodated with no fuss whatsoever.
The culprit here is not Bristol (though of course the university should have reviewed the materials of this training) but rather these workshops that actually do the opposite of what they’re meant to do, which is create an inclusive work environment.

From a mix of DMs and a quick google search, it appears the same problematic diversity training module is or has been used at UCL, Bournemouth, Manchester, Bath, Kent, and Liverpool John Moores.
Does your university use it? Check your pages for the provider @MarshallACM.
It’s hard to speak up, but I think it’s important we do. It’s also important that we work with these providers so they understand why this advice is discriminatory.
