Now for something completely different…

…a “short” plea for 'Global Governance' (1)

Preserving humanity and the natural world from demise? Creating a better world? Very noble goals, but will it ever be possible to attain them without following preconditions?
1/59
Precondition 1:
General adoption of a mindset based on sound moral/ethical principles* to set straight our mutual relationships and relationship with the whole Web of Life.
#RegenerateTheWebOfLife
#BackToInterbeing
#ParadigmShift
2/59
Precondition 2:
Global Unity in Diversity, cooperatively converging to and behind one common goal:
#GlobalUnity
#GlobalJustice
#OneHumanFamily
3/59
Precondition 3:
Decentralised Global Governance** & Global Law by the peoples of the world***,each firmly founded on fore-mentioned moral/ethical principles and in genuine service of all of humanity & nature.
#GlobalGovenanceByThePeople
#GlobalLaw
4/59
Clearly this would be anything but easy, requiring a great deal of rethinking&rebuilding of political, economic & financial systems; deliberation, studies & education; but, more importantly, a large dose of goodwill, common sense, solidarity & cooperation

5/59
Unrealistic, utopian though this all may seem, it’s most likely the only possible, realistic and logical evolutionary path to choose that can lead us away from our present (self-) destructive path.
Just think about it…

The logic, need for, and purpose of 'Global Governance' simply explained:
Imagine a class of children who start to do things they shouldn't do,like making a complete mess of the class. And there are some bullies amongst them who start to compete over ...
7/59
.. dominance while also stealing from the other children and harassing them.
Who or what is missing in the picture?
Obviously a teacher, a higher authority to make the children behave properly, i.o.w. within proper ethical/moral boundaries.
8/59
Ideally, it also should be an unbiased teacher, one who doesn't favour certain children, so that all of them get equal treatment and education
9/59
Also, 'Global Governance' shouldn't be confused with 'New World Order'. While the last implies a small elitist group, the first is quite the opposite and would be an egalitarian, genuinely democratic organisation by & for the peoples of the world
10/59
*IMHO, the most obvious, rational and logical set of moral/ethical guiding principles suited to make this urgently needed evolutionary process can be found in "Intelligent Ethics" by Luke Andreski.
11/59
** Governance by citizens' assemblies, as an overarching authority. The core purpose of Global Governance/Law should be to permanently free the world from war, genocide, poverty, nature destruction, biodiversity loss, inequality, pollution...
12/59
..or anything which would obviously violate the founding moral/ethical principles. In short, to look after the wellbeing of every human & ensure that the present & future generations can all live in mutual harmony, within and with the whole Web of Life
13/59
*** democratic participation of all ethnicities, nationalities, communities
14/59
Please note that this thread is a personal, simple musing about some whats&whys of Global Governance, which is no new concept(alas not very well known & promoted among the general public).Just browse it or e.g.Democratic Globalization, World Citizens to find similar ideas
15/59
There’ll be different views but that's no big deal. The main point is to realise that we urgently need some kind of democratic world governance since it is the only logical &efficient way to get us out of the mess we're in &avoid our world running completely out of control
16/59
'Global Governance’ (2)
Since all major problems plaguing this world are intimately interrelated, it should be obvious that an 'all in one' approach is needed. Trying to solve this or that local or global problem, now here, then there...
17/59
...without substantially touching the underlying root causes will never work. Some specific problems might get solved, and that's great, but how long will they remain solved if the root causes are still solidly in place?
18/59
However admirable, good and necessary all those specific goals and efforts are, in essence, globally and long term, their 'changing effect' will be insufficient (and at most will have only a delaying effect on the systemic tendency towards global collapse)...
19/59
...and that's exactly how those who don't actually care about the Web of Life and our children’s future like it, since their main concern and priority is maintaining (and increasing) dominance and wealth.
20/59
So, wouldn’t it be better that besides focusing on specific goals, activists &organisations, what- or whoever also gather collectively behind one global common goal & work together in an 'all in one' approach, theoretical & practical?
21/59
And if so, then preferably with following starting points in mind:
–Deliberation & consensus on proper universal ethical & moral principles(to serve as the constitutional fundaments of Global Gov. &Law, at this point nothing but a concept) & organisational aspects
22/59
–Cooperative scientific research(political, economic, ecological,..)to find&propose practical solutions through systemic change for all major humanitarian& ecological problems, connected across the different fields,& within the framework of the global eth./moral principles
23/59
–Dialogue and deliberation regarding universal ethical/moral principles & proposed solutions/systemic changes by democratic participation of all ethnicities, communities and nationalities.
24/59
–Certain emphasis on consultation, participation, and input from Indigenous cultures, since those cultures usually have a more balanced way of life with and within the Web of Life
25/59
Also, even when it is very unlikely that some people would welcome such ideas with much enthusiasm, it is nevertheless not undoable to initially build a real and/or virtual test case(s) (with several political, economic, financial models to find out which would work best).
26/59
(Reformation of the UN into an independent and democratic highest authority, as a hub for the decentralised structure led by the peoples is also a something that could be considered in the context of ‘Global Governance’
27/59
Since centralisation and decentralisation each have their advantages & disadvantages, it's just a matter of working something out with the best of both worlds)
28/59
All that's said here is of course very general and sketchy, but perhaps much smarter & wiser humans than this one might choose to elaborate it further & better, or maybe even come up with an even more logical and more easily accomplished 'all in one' pathway.
29/59
The only thing that really matters is that whatever proposed pathway is found and chosen, it's a pathway that can lead humanity to a world of peace, overall human well-being and ecological balance.
30/59
'Global Governance' (3)
A little bit about root causes:
The two main root causes of local and global humanitarian and ecological problems/crises are:
31/59
1: Absolute sovereignty, which implies the irresponsible & immoral freedom (or 'right') of nations (or better: national leaders) to begin or engage in war with result of grand scale suffering, death, destruction.
32/59
It also implies the irresponsible & immoral freedom to follow self- or elite-serving policies at the cost of the well-being of humans of other nations and sometimes even of their own population, certain minorities or communities, and of the natural world.
33/59
2: Growthism*, which implies the irresponsible & immoral freedom to unlimitedly accumulate wealth at the cost of the well-being of other humans and with resultant destruction of the biosphere, local and global.
34/59
*Growthism in a very broad sense: “The craving for ever more dominance and wealth”. So it's something that goes back to the dawn of civilisation and probably even before, and of which exploitative capitalism is an extended continuation
35/59
Short digression:
1/Capitalist growthism runs mainly on redundancy = the creation, production of ever more superfluous products & artificial needs, and somehow making more & more people consume those products.
2/Most of it has little to do with real progress and improvement of life's quality. And since everything comes at cost of something else (most often nature, but also often other humans' well-being) it leads, in the bigger picture, to much more regress than progress.
37/59
3/All this redundancy might of course be like a great party for a certain part of humanity but it's a party that can't last forever and rather sooner than later will end in a big nightmare for all of humanity.
38/59
4/So, a smooth transition away from excessive redundancy without bringing people into problems (redundancy <-> work dependence) is something to seriously consider if we want to leave a liveable planet for the next generations
39/59
Anyway, those two root causes, in their interplay, are and will be* the destroyers of the Web of Life, an ultimate death trap. And we're all in it, including those who sustain and support it.
(*If they remain in place.)
40/59
It might seem as if 'overpopulation' is also a root cause. But that's not really the case. Earth can provide enough to give everyone a decent and agreeable life but only in case of fair global distribution of food & other resources...
41/59
...and in putting our local & global focus on production & consumption of life-essential foods, products & services, while also to an appropriate degree limiting production & consumption of the less-essential (to allow ecological restoration & stability).
42/59
8 billion humans should be, in a world of peace and equitability (re. income, work, possessions, ownership) a manageable challenge. It's only the two root causes that impose & promote wrong foci upon the world and so turn present population numbers into a problem.
43/59
Also, due to climate change the whole situation will get worse and lead to increased competition & conflict. It's obvious that prior changes in the root causes, leading to an increase of cooperation, mutual support & peace would be far more desirable.
44/59
'Global Governance (4)
Some say the world needs more love, mutual understanding and respect. It's true, they are definitely key elements to make this world a better place for everyone.
45/59
But these aren’t enough to bring about the needed changes without a practical pathway, an organised structure with sufficient humans and motivation backing it up*, in order to achieve the necessary changes at the level of the root causes.
46/59
*This is the way most communities and societies are built up and function anyway. It's nothing new, except for the global scale.
47/59
Is ‘Global Governance’ about revolution? Not quite.
Revolutions can of course deliver significant social improvements but, as history shows, are mostly just a replacement of an old elite by a new elite, offering little or no root systemic change.
48/59
They are also mostly based on an emotional, spontaneous reaction with most 'followers' probably unaware of what will follow afterwards, leaving it up to a small group of 'leaders' to arrange the new order. These two aspects should not be part of 'Global Governance'.
49/59
In fact, ‘Global Governance’ is much more about evolution.
It should be a well-considered, all-inclusive process, a process relying an based on an urgently needed ethical/moral 'mindset' evolution of the whole Human Family.
50/59
Or, simply said, that we finally come, as a species, to our senses and work, within an appropriate timescale, from governments to citizens all over the world, together towards the set goals.
51/59
It is also important in the context of Global Governance (if it ever should come to pass) that its organisation and workings provide sufficient measures to prevent irresponsible & immoral freedoms for representatives sneaking in.
51/59
This could be done by:
Examining and monitoring the ethical/moral suitability of (candidate) representatives, no special privileges & incentives and close monitoring of their financial and material situations (by an independent global watchdog).
52/59
Some (of many) questions which might arise:
How to practically organise Global Governance so it will function properly as intended?
What might be possible drawbacks of Global Governance?
53/59
How to share income (and global wealth in general), employment, etc. globally more evenly, and how to redirect, or compensate for, employment of sectors that might become significantly reduced or even redundant?Or more general, how to decouple well-being from productivity?
54/59
How to align specific cultural features with the core universal ethical/moral principles in a way that it has minimal influence on cultural identity? How to incorporate demographic differences?
55/59
How to bring, in the most civilised way possible, those who want to hold on to the root causes, the irresponsible & immoral freedoms and consequential 'benefits', to reason and convince them of the urgent necessity of, and to support, choosing a new pathway?
56/59
These were only a few possible questions and obviously there remain a lot more questions to think about, discuss and work on. All in all, it would be a huge and quite difficult endeavour.
57/59
But…will we have sufficient common sense, goodwill, dedication and motivation to undertake such an endeavour? To make that giant evolutionary leap over the precipice to reach new, save grounds, for ourselves and the next generations?
58/59
Or will we, some aware, others ignorant, some resisting, others denying, all just get dragged along by the root causes' torrent straight into the precipice?
Time will tell….
Who knows the complete story anyway?
