🧵I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Biden's speech didn't really track with our covid policies. Like, does a country with harsh mandates banning kids from society & forcing people to lose their jobs sound like a place where the "people rule" & their "will prevails?"...
Does it sound like a place never ruled by a "strongman," where the people have the "right to govern" themselves? And does preventing kids from getting an education allow them to "determine our own destiny?" Are we sure we're not "putting fear over hope" by masking 2 yr olds?...
Does divisive rhetoric about the dangers of the unvaccinated support the idea that "all people are created equal" or honor our "responsibility to see each other as neighbors"? Does censoring and suppressing dissenting voices sound like a place that doesn't "bury the truth"?...
Is a nation that ignores global scientific consensus and policy, that chooses safety theater over science and creates cruel, pointless restrictions that harm kids one that "lifts us up" by "the light of the truth" or one that "tears us apart" "under the shadow of lies"?...
I'm all for being protected from the "dagger at the throat of our democracy" and remembering we are "one nation" of "liberty, freedom, and equality." But if we are serious about making sure the "will of the people is heard," it's probably a good idea to start listening.

🧵This article. I am so filled with rage and pain. I want to scream. And cry. We destroyed children's lives, took a wrecking ball to an entire generation, shattered childhoods without hesitation. And for what? To protect them? To keep them safe?...
The kids needed to be protected - but not from Covid, from ourselves - from our "experts," our leaders, our "science." We were always the far greater threat to them. We traded science and reason, compassion and common sense for ignorance, politics, fear, and misinformation...
We pretended the rest of the world didn't exist. We ignored our children's calls for help, ignored the pleas of desperate parents telling us their kids were not ok. We traded our kids' futures for cheap safety theater, small-minded, short-sighted politics, and fake science...
🧵 As a born and raised New Yorker, I've never even considered living anywhere else. Raising my kids here was the best gift and privilege I could give them. But last night, as I tucked my son into bed just after the ball dropped, I was overwhelmed by sadness and guilt...
Sadness for the years of childhood my son has lost & for my 2 year old who's never known normal. Sadness for what's become of the greatest city in the world. Sadness for my fellow New Yorkers, who used to smell bullshit from a mile away & who'd do anything to defend our city...
Guilt for allowing my city to become a toxic environment for children. For not fighting pointless, harmful, unscientific policies. For knowing we are the extreme, the fanatics, the exception, not the norm, but not moving almost anywhere else to give my kids a better life...
