When Bill Gates or Warren Buffet answer the question "Why are you so rich and successful?" with "I've been enormously lucky." they're doing society a disservice in the hope that more people will like them.

Wealth and success are a product of talent, drive, the ability to

learn from your mistakes and then change your behavior— not luck.

Yes, those guys were lucky to be born in the US when they were, to be born smart, to have not been hit by a bus, and to not have had parents who fucked them up (too much), but we're all the lucky sperm.

The average person gets 630,000 hours on this planet.

You mean to tell me that with that much time, you weren't able to overcome whatever "bad luck" you faced in your life?

Give me a break.

3/4
Your life is in your control. Saying otherwise is misinformation and a form of coping.

I'm rich and successful because I'm smart and I worked at it.

No reason you can't do the same, if you stop making excuses.

Series of tweets which explains what Baumol’s Cost Disease is and then applies it to countries instead of people, and then finally makes predictions about which developing countries will make it and why.

Here we go:
“Baumol's cost disease (or the Baumol effect) is the rise of salaries in jobs that have experienced no or low increase of labor productivity, in response to rising salaries in other jobs that have experienced higher labor productivity growth.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baumol%27…
Examples:

Goldman Sachs must raise their starting wage for college grads because if they don’t, they will work at higher salaries for Facebook.

US manufacturers must raise their wages to compete with Amazon’s logistics and warehousing wages to get labor.

We mocked the Romans for using lead to carry water and wine, but are we doing the same thing with plastic water pipes?

1/2

link.springer.com/article/10.100… Image
Does anyone know well what type of pipes are used for:

1. City water main
2. Connection between water main and house
3. Internal house piping (I know we use copper for anything hot inside the home)

Someone told me that ALL exterior pipes are PVC and that just blew my mind

2/3
You're not allowed to use PVC anytime the water gets over some temperature, but interestingly, the soil is kinda hot in the US south - are we using PVC for all that?

More people moved to Florida and Texas than any other states in 2021.

I’ve lived in Texas since 2018 and I like thinking about cities so I thought I’d make a quick guide of the big 5 Texas cities for people thinking about moving to Texas.

🧵👇
Here the 5 cities I decided to focus on:

1. Dallas
2. Dallas’ lesser known twin city Fort Worth
3. Houston
4. San Antonio
5. Austin

There are other major cities in Texas such as El Paso, Corpus Christi, Lubbock and more, but these are the ones posed for the most growth.
Texas cities’ food ranked from best (#1) to worst (#5).

1. Houston
2. Austin
3. Dallas
4. Fort Worth
5. San Antonio

These are my opinions. Disagree as you see fit. I’ve spent a lot of time in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin. I’ve spent a slightly less in Houston, and just 2 weekends in San Antonio.

Without further ado let’s get started:

Market concentration of internet industries

1. User Generated Video: concentrated market (tiktok, YouTube)
2. Podcasts: fragmented market (Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, Website, etc)
3. Images: concentrated (Facebook, Instagram)
4. Movies/TV: fragmented (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+)

1/5
5. Messages: concentrated (Facebook, WhatsApp)
6. Text: concentrated (Twitter, Facebook)
7. Music: fragmented (Spotify, Amazon, Apple)
8. Durable e-commerce: concentrated (amazon)
9. Perishable e-commerce: fragmented (Walmart, Instacart, Amazon, Kroger)

2/5
Why are some of these industries fragmented and some concentrated?

Images, Messages, and Text all have strong network effects so that seems like the answer for their concentration, but why are User Generated Video and Durable E-commerce concentrated but Music, Podcasts,

We all have bad mental habits.

To make the most of your life (the only one you get), fix those habits as soon as you can.

The earlier you start, the easier they are to correct. By the time you’re old, it’s too late for most.

Some examples from my own life:

- I am so vindictive that when my real estate broker told me that he didn’t want to work with me I drove around the city for multiple days to buy real estate without him in part to say “I told you so”. Now I’m balls deep in a massive project b/c
I felt disrespected. How is that even close to logical? It’s retarded.

- Perhaps because of what I’ve experienced in my upbringing and early business career (a lot of horrible shit), I too quickly jump to the conclusion that someone is screwing me over it being a coincidence, or
