why would giving families a choice "hurt" public schools?

the money doesn't belong to the government schools.
education funding is meant for educating children - not for propping up and protecting a particular institution.

No one should be forced to pay others for services they aren't providing.
Grocery store employees are working in person.

Somehow private schools, daycares, and other businesses were able to figure it out.

The problem is government schools get your money regardless of whether they open their doors for business.
If a grocery store closes, families can take their money elsewhere
