If your New Year resolution is to write a play, then I hope I can help in a small way by sharing some resources that you can dip into during your playwriting journey. It’s by no means exhaustive (not at all) but something is better than nothing. 🧵
@markravenhill2's tweets regularly provide an insight into the writing process and you will find many gems. Last year, he did a wonderful series called ‘101 Notes on Playwriting’. No need to dig for tweets. They have been compiled here:
@eve_leigh’s pinned tweet is a treasure trove thread of exercises, links and very handy tips for writing. It’s like attending a workshop via a twitter thread. Dynamic stuff! #WorkshopForADigitalBody
If you’re someone who likes to talk to people and bounce ideas, then have a wee gander at @wowfest whose current Writer on the Bloc is @g_ting. The link below gives you the opportunity to engage with the playwright and/or the Bloc community of writers:
Check out @NationalTheatre 's channel on Youtube. If you go back a few years on their video history, you will find a series of short films on elements like dialogue and characters by playwrights such as Simon Stephens, Tanya Ronder and Inua Ellams.
I love subscribing to @filmcourage on yt and hearing the participants’ thoughts on what makes a good screenplay. Playwriting is not a completely unrelated topic as some contributors like Jack Grapes and Gary Goldstein do mull story and playwriting.
The website for @royalcourt has a section dedicated to playwriting. You will find a lot of writing exercises from many playwrights as well as writing tips on their podcast.
Get involved in #WrAP 2022 via @LDNPlaywrights! The challenge is to write a play by the end of January. Receive emails prompts and even live zoom sessions to get you motivated. More details can be found at
The Old Vic @oldvictheatre also has a section dedicated to playwriting. The Inside Guide to Playwriting is worth a download and includes tips and advice from Vinay Patel, Sabrina Mahfouz and Hannah Khalil.
