Genshin Impact introduced Chinese Opera and culture elements in new char Yun Jin. But did you know her story of Shenhe was based on real Chinese legend?

I will do a thread on ancient legend of 李寄斩蛇 little girl who kills giant snake 🧵
Story of little girl Li Ji 李寄 killing giant snake was 1st recorded in East Jin Dynasty book Soushen Ji (In Search of the Supernatural 搜神记) written around 350 AD
It’s said there lived a giant snake in the mountains of Min (Fujian). It kills and maims people. Villagers offered cows and sheeps as sacrifice to appease it but to no avail
The giant snake visited dreams of local shaman demanding to eat 12-13 yr old girl every harvest time. Local officials would collect criminals’ daughters and raise them til harvest to feed the snake
Aft 9 yrs, 9 girls have lost their lives. Many family w daughters fled. Li family has 6 daughters no son. Youngest Li Ji 李寄 wants to volunteer herself. Her parents wouldn’t allow it.
Li Ji snuck out and went to volunteer herself as human sacrifice to the giant snake at local gov office. She demanded a sharp sword and snake hunting dog.
She took w her a sword, a hunting dog and rice balls 🍙 that she mixed w honey to lure the giant snake out
She waited inside the temple dedicated to the giant snake. The giant snake lured out by honey rice balls. She set the dog on the snake and slashed the snake’s body w her sword
The giant snake crawls to the back of the temple and die frm its injuries.

Li Ji followed and retrieved skulls of 9 girls who had been eaten in previous yrs. She sighed “Beacuse you’re weak and timid, you’re eaten by snake. Such a pity” She then went home to her family
After Communist victory in 1949, Chinese gov organized artists to produce illustrated comics to popularize traditional stories to the masses. I grew up reading them in 1980s. Images drawn by 项维仁 for the 1984 Manhua version of 李寄斩蛇

Kids nowadays have it easy when they can just order mulberry tree leaves on Taobao.

When I was growing up in China in 1980s, I had to hunt/gather mulberry tree leaves all over Chongqing University campus to feed my 10-20 silk worms. lol
Mulberry trees grow in the wild on Chongqing University campus, and they're tall for little kids to reach. I had to bring a pole to bring down the leaves to feed my silkworms

When I traveled to Zhejiang to see Grandma, I marveled at field of domesticated short Mulberry trees
I also just learned that you can buy silk worms in store now. lol. Back in 1980s Chongqing, I had to get precious silk worm eggs from friends to hatch them myself. lol

I will do a thread 🧵 on the origin of the phrase "Hurting the feelings of the Chinese people" and why Imperialist bootlickers have hate it ever since.
According to “China Called Me”, autobiography by Percy Chen, his father Eugene Chen, the Foreign Minister of China invented the phrase in 1927 as a negotiation tactic w British to take back British Concessions in Wuhan.
Eugene Chen's dad, a 1-legged Taiping rebel escaped Qing suppression of Taiping Rebellion to the Caribbean as an coolie turned shopkeeper. Mom raised Eugene in the grocery shop on Trinidad aft Dad's death. Eugene became a lawyer, married Agatha Ganteaume, daughter of a slave.

I didn’t expect to see Elon Musk quoting Cao Zhi on my TL.

Ok, I will tell the Three Kingdoms story of this poem 🧵
Well known to Dynasty Warriors fans, Cao Cao is the baddest warlord to emerge out of collapse of Han Dynasty after Yellow Turban Rebellion broke out in 184 AD.

Trailer frm 2010 Drama Advisor’s Alliance
Cao Cao’s heir Cao Ang died giving his horse to Dad to escape in battle of Wancheng. Favorite son Cao Chong died young. That left No 2 son Cao Pi (L) and No 3 Cao Zhi (R) to fight to be Dad’s heir

I just woke up from a vivid dream that seemed so real:

A constant buzz coming frm me while I was in a crowded area. I tried to go inside the building, away frm crowds’ gaze. Suddenly 🚨 went off, securities rushes out to stop and search people. security woman questioned me abt..
A microchip in my wallet which I didn’t realize was there. I just realized they’re after the chip. She placed a security badge inside my wallet. I grabbed it and ran.

I ran into my old IT boss, he was discussing the alert w someone and he seems to know the reason behind it...
I just want to get away. I went inside elevator to get back to my desk. The elevator suddenly lost control. We were taken straight to the top. masked gunmen greeted us on the top level. They’re looking for the chip and Carl Zha. I gave my name in Chinese and was overlooked...

During Vietnam War, Times Magazine had a “Chrismas in Vietnam” special to promote US troops sex tourism around Asia on Dec 22, 1967

The photo in Taiwan exposed how KMT created sex tourism industry catering to GIs. 200,000 GI visited Taiwan frm 1965-1970.
Japanese Colonial authorities on Taiwan started the women attended bath in Peitou hot spring. After Imperial Japanese Army left Taiwan, KMT used Peitou hot spring sex industry to cater to US troops.
Chiang Kai-shek esp ordered regulation on taxi, hotel and sex workers health check to cater to US GI because GI spend abt $200 per visit. Taiwan earned total abt 10 billion Taiwan dollars during Vietnam War. This part of Taiwan economic takeoff rarely discussed

I do remember the pressure to assimilate was intense among immigrant Chinese families in 1990s US. Many Chinese parents explicitly wished their children gain mastery of English so they would have better opportunities than them. Keeping Chinese language wasn't a priority 4 most
I also knew many kids who knew Chinese but CHOSE to only speak English. so to save both of us frm awkwardness, I would only speak Chinese if other person initiate convo in Chinese. Over time, Chinese became an intimate language that I would only speak w family
Our family language also shifted from Sichuanese to Standard Mandarin when we moved to US. Since my parents' circle were mostly Chinese students frm all over China studying in US. Dad's 1st language is 海宁话 frm Zhejiang. He prbly relieved not having to speak Sichuanese again
