@The_Rumpus is open for essay submissions until February 28, so here’s a #RumpusEssays thread in which our editors share what they would like to see. Give them a follow and send your essay our way via @submittable (See submission guidelines: therumpus.submittable.com/submit)
Asst. Editor @ShaanWrites would “love to see pieces straddling the line of academic and lyrical. Bonus points if the academic material is non-literary (e.g., economics, hard sciences, history)!" #RumpusEssays
@ShaanWrites Asst. Editor @ajshults appreciates essays about "the things that get you through—think slice of life as a lens to a bigger argument or cultural phenomenon (not an endpoint)." #RumpusEssays
Asst. Ed. @onpapercuts: “I'm drawn in by image, language, sound, precision—poets & poets-at-heart, I'm talking to you! I'm interested in study, meditation, exploration—essays more about looking than answers, especially if you're a writer in/of the global south.” #RumpusEssays
@onpapercuts Editor @darcyjaygagnon is interested “in your quiet, lyric meditations on music, food, science, and overexplicit gay sex (the gayer the better).” #RumpusEssays
Asst Ed @TaylorByas3: “I'm looking for connection. We've all lived different lives and had different experiences, but when an essay builds a bridge and allows me to meet an author where they are, I get excited. Bonus points for language that leans into the lyrical!” #RumpusEssays
@TaylorByas3 Editor @kaytaybayy wants to “dive into essays that bore all the way to the core of a subject and then just a hair beyond. Show us your expertise and interest. Show us how to be curious and wise.” #RumpusEssays
Editor @katiekosma "craves creative nonfiction that addresses a fascinating facet of our world/culture/environment and why it matters to the author." #RumpusEssays
Asst. Editor @LoebDavon is looking for “genre-bending essays that marry individual & universal storytelling (essay about you, but about us too!). Black, brown, LGTBQ+, & other underrepresented writers encouraged.” #RumpusEssays
@LoebDavon Senior Editor @eve_ettinger is looking for “regionalism, climate change coping (but one of multiple threads in a piece pls!), messy parenting, sex, & disability essays. Anything that looks at a commonly overlooked experience from the underside.” #RumpusEssays
Editor @tlpavlich: "I’d love to read about that weird, niche topic you’re obsessed with. Your Pog collection, those ribbon candies that seemingly only grandmas buy, your new obscure hobby. Distract me from the horrible big picture with your hyperfixations." #RumpusEssays
As for me: I especially like experimental essays that break essayistic norms, as well as researched essays on niche topics that make me excited to learn something new. #RumpusEssays
@The_Rumpus Features Editor @happiestwerther is “still (forever) in love with the researched essays that teach me something about a subject while I also learn about a narrator.” #RumpusEssays
@The_Rumpus Assistant Features Editor @sarahkasbeer would like to see “essays with unexpected engines / innovative structures / emotional and intellectual depth / good ole narrative tension.” #RumpusEssays
The Rumpus is open for essay submissions until July 31 (therumpus.submittable.com/submit), so as an editorial staff we put together this thread of what we would like to see in @The_Rumpus submissions:
@marisasaystweet, the Editor-in-Chief of @The_Rumpus, would like to see “Prose by poets, hybrid genre writing, lyric essays. All the weird but good stuff!”
@likethchampagne, the Managing Editor of @The_Rumpus, requests: “Essays that tackle toxic masculinity, particularly from men. Essays that use images to do their emotional lifting. More kink essays plz.”
