1/10 If you look what the “nation” part of “nation-state” actually means then the idea that any nation state inherently or automatically should have a right to exist becomes more than a little questionable under a lot of circumstances.

Cambridge Dictionary has two definitions:
2/10 a) a country, especially when thought of as a large group of people living in one area with their own government, language, traditions,

b) a large group of people of the same race who share the same language, traditions, and history, but who might not all live in one area
3/10 Nation-states have some strong tendencies towards being exclusionary and all too often people by definition who are outside the ethnic, cultural, linguistic or racial majority become marginalised within nation-states themselves.
4/10 The idea of a nation being able to have the right to “self-determination” sounds alright, so long as you assume that everyone within a given nation has the same interests (which they hardly ever do) and so long as everyone in that state considers themselves as part of that…
5/10 ..nation (which is rare).

What this means for anybody interested or concerned with any kind of emancipatory politics is that the concept and reality of the nation-state and nationalism is not only something can never be beyond scrutiny but also needs to be subject to a high
6/10 degree of scepticism.

No nation-state or nationalism can be used as an excuse to continually oppress any kind of minority. People who deny that any nation or nationalism should be subjected to this kind of scrutiny are setting the conditions precisely to enable this kind of
7/10...oppression.

This is also the problem when some people try to insist that some nation-states or their own, are somehow more unique, valid and deserving of consideration than others.
8/10 Therein lies the problem; for such people and all of us too, know, deep down in our hearts, that no nationalism can really withstand the scrutiny of a doubting public.
