In 2018 I wanted to invest more. I cut down costs until it hurt. At that point, cutting 100€/mo is more difficult than earning 300€ more. So I started to very deliberately work on my salary.

It grew 4x since.

🤝 learn to negotiate. Seriously, it's like a few books and articles + some practice and it makes you 20% to 50% more. Best ROI of all.

🏁 learn the goals of your manager (personal and org) and help them reach them.

If your (only) goal is more salary, you need to get promoted, have more impact, and have people rooting for you. If you help them succeed, they want you to stick around and take more responsibility

❓Simply ask:
What would I do this year that would make you say: "wow, that's some serious overachievement" next year?
What's your priority #0 I can help you achieve this year?

Get this + hard KPIs. Then go solve it & update them with your progress regularly. All in writing.

🙋‍♂️ apply at other companies - every 2 years at least. It helps you train and understand your market value. I've seen people widely over-or underestimate their worth. I'm talking about 2 - 3x differences.
Get real offers in place. Also helps with negotiating.

👋 I've seen many companies who won't raise a salary 6% but if you quit and come back 6 months later, you'll have a 30% increase. Stupid, expensive, reality. If that's your org... well, move on after getting your offers in.

Give them the chance for the increase before.

💪 no matter if your co is wildly successful or struggling and has to let people go: be a pragmatic problem solver.
No complaining all day, no ignoring what's happening. Pick a problem and get to work - they will pay you A LOT to stick around as a motivated problem solver.

🌱 Learn & Grow
Read books on leadership, negotiation, influencing ppl, learning, focus, habits, org transformations, group psychology, etc.
Get some training, coaches, or into the leadership drill of your co.
In 1 year you will have developed far & your salary will follow

🤝 it's so important I want to mention it again: learn negotiating. This will affect how you frame things, how you communicate. It will change a "you vs your manager" to a "my manager and I solve this together".
