[wip] Early draft of a thing to show results for the main (>2 min) 5v5 forward matchups. Posting here because I don't know what to do with it next yet.
Along the way of making this I've realized something curious: hockey really /isn't/ a matchup sport. If you rattle off the ten most common forward line matchups, for instance, you don't even cover half the 5v5 time in a typical regular season game.
Some coaches matchup more than others, but even looking at d-vs-f or d-vs-d, it's just not how the game is actually played. Everybody plays against everybody, most of the time.
As for the chart, I think I'm gonna work something into the gutter to show shift start locations but other than that it might be done, actually.

Over the last few weeks I've seen a lot of Flyers fans not happy with Keith Yandle, which I thought was funny, he's always seemed very ordinary to me. But then I looked up what the Flyers have looked like defensively with him this season, and then I understood. Image
Yandle's always been pretty high event, maybe the flyers are getting a lot for their trouble? They are not. Image
Big jump recently in the shots allowed, too; which explains the wailing at the gnashing of teeth, not that flyers fans have ever needed an excuse. Image

Karel Vejmelka had himself a game.
Leafs as a team had one (1) defensive zone shift start.
Also, what a luxury to have a guy like Spezza on your fourth line to bring on as the extra attacker.

Finishing for forwards with at least 130 unblocked shots taken. McDavid being at par is poor by his standards.

The nhl, and many other leagues, would be improved by adopting gold drafting, which gives every team a full slate of exciting games, eliminates tanking, and gives the best draft picks to the weakest teams, who need them the most.
Gold drafting is when the teams with the /best/ record get the better draft picks, but the only games which count are the ones played /after/ a team is eliminated from the playoffs. I've written an article explaining it in detail: hockeyviz.com/txt/gold

It's named after Adam Gold, who proposed it first. I have added an extra wrinkle: teams who do not want to wait for elimination by circumstance can declare themselves eliminated at any time. Instead they will accumulate points towards a good draft pick.
