A quick thread on two new @IpsosMORI polls reporting a sharp drop in the importance of env/climate as an issue and globally a lack of 'citizen mobilisation' despite high levels of concern...
After hitting its highest ever level during COP26 (40% naming it as most important issue facing country) its dropped back down again pretty fast in UK (by 27 points)
I'm surprised at the size of the drop but not surprised it has tailed off after COP which dominated headlines for weeks. The 'most important' measure is a reflection of how salient the issue is at any given time & now its less salient than a month ago
Some global polling by EDF and Ipsos is weirder - I don't know if its Q wording being lost in translation from French, but some of the Qs seem v strangely phrased - and there's the old chestnut of asking people to choose between env & economy which should be banned!
Here's the global polling - it does seem to show lower support than most of the global polls I've seen over last two years, not sure why but some unusual choices e.g. splitting out concern about 'climate' from 'climate impacts' which splits those votes?
I think the strong trend is still that there was a huge upsurge of climate concern over the last few years and Covid didn't kill that off. But we can't assume public support is just sitting there waiting for the next net zero policy, it really isnt...
And if people's real & genuine fears about energy prices aren't listened to properly by env movement & climate costs get mangled in with cost of living crisis things could start looking more dicey again quickly in terms of public support
