❗️Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) conducted a special operation against REvil at the request of the United States

Original FSB press-release fsb.ru/fsb/press/mess…
FSB released this video (via @rianru t.me/rian_ru/139823) of an operation against REvil
The FSB has already informed responsible U.S. agencies it says

But, according to Reuters, "The U.S. Embassy in Moscow said it could not immediately comment."

reuters.com/technology/rus…
Interestingly, REvil members were charged with Article 187 of the Criminal Code, "Illegal turnover of means of payment," part 2 (crime committed by an organized group), rather with other computer crime related articles HT @alukatsky
@alukatsky In late September @ElenaChernenko reported that Russia and U.S. resumed law enforcement cooperation on cyber crime, and Russia was receiving info on specific groups including REvil

This was later confirmed by @SangerNYT & @antontroian (without specific groups being named)

AFAIK the United States wanted their activities to stop and never asked or expected that Russia turn someone over

"we do attribute today’s announcement to [...] the President’s commitment to diplomacy and the channel that he established and the work that has been underway in sharing information and in discussing the need for Russia to take action"

No one asked for extradition

It's not often that the Vienna Document para 16 is invoked, which happened today in the OSCE, so let's do a recap

Thread 1/10
Per para 16, states "consult and co-operate with each other about any unusual and unscheduled activities of their military forces outside their normal peacetime locations which are militarily significant [...] about which a participating State expresses its security concern" 2/10
First, the state which has concerns about an unusual military activity taking place on another state's territory can send it a request for clarification. The latter needs to respond within 48 hours osce.org/files/f/docume… 3/10
