本日、岩波ホールでの7週の上映が全て終わりました。この上映は監督達も配給者も語り尽くせないほど特別な上映でした。最終日の本日、監督達から届いたステートメントを紹介してさせて頂きます。長くなりますが是非最後までお読み下さい。

岩波ホール閉館の発表は、私たちを深く揺さぶっただけでなく、世界中に衝撃を与えました。東京の小さな映画館が永遠に閉館するというローカルなニュースが、アメリカからヨーロッパ、南米、アジア、オセアニアまで、国際メディアの文化チャンネルを通じて突如ブレイキング・ニュースとなりました。

岩波ホールは、おそらく多くの人が思っている以上に有名であり、私たちは、岩波ホールが東京の小さな映画館ではなく、日本の映画ファンや世界中の映画制作者にとって、唯一無二の聖地であることを実感しています。岩波ホール50周年記念で上映した『ゲッベルスと私』、そして今回の『ユダヤ人の私』の

2作品を上映できたことは、私たちの誇りであり、光栄なことです。

岩波ホールは50年以上にわたり、何十万人もの観客に世界の映画を見せる窓として、そして世界の映画の縮図として、まさに文化の殿堂となってきました。エキプ・ド・シネマの創設者である高野悦子氏と川喜多かしこ氏は、

この小さなホールに世界中の映画を持ち込んだ国際人であり、その結果、数え切れないほどの来館者にインスピレーションを与えてきました。岩波ホールの閉館は、映画館がなくなるだけでなく、映画、そして、国際文化交流に生涯を捧げた多くのスタッフのライフワークも消滅させることになるのです。

この唯一無二の文化遺産を受け継ぎ、長年にわたり情熱を注いできた岩波律子氏が、このたびこの施設を閉鎖する役をします。パンデミックにより、岩波ホールは採算がとれなくなったと言われています。しかし、すべてを利益で測ってはいけない。

芸術や文化は、他のどの種族とも異なるものであり、お金や利益よりも価値があるものでしょう。パンデミックはやがて過ぎ去ります。しかしこの施設は永遠に失われてしまうのです。文化は、コロナの影響を受ける唯一の分野ではありませんが、最も脆弱な分野の一つであります。

日本は千年以上の文化や伝統を誇り、日本人は芸術との親和性が高くあります。映画は比較的若い芸術形態ですが、異文化への深い洞察をあたえ、人々を結束させ、そして、私たち全員がそこから学ぶことができるものです。文化国家である日本にとって、岩波ホールがなくなることは大きな損失であろう。

映画館は魔法のような場所であり、ここは特にそうであります。フィクションフィルムではファンタジーの場であり、ドキュメンタリーフィルムでは時にイラつかされる事もあるが、学びの場であります。岩波ホールは常にその両方のジャンルをつないできました。

だからこそ、私たちの夢と、そして悪夢すらも、スクリーンの光に映し出される神秘的な空間として存在する映画館を維持するために、私たちは戦おうではありませんか。

The announcement to close Iwanami Hall has not only shaken us deeply - it has sent shockwaves around the globe. Local news on a small cinema in Tokyo closing its doors forever suddenly became BREAKING NEWS through the cultural channels of international media,

from the US to Europe, from South America to Asia to Oceania. Iwanami Hall is probably more famous than many of us thought and we realize that Iwanami Hall is not just a small cinema in the centre of Tokyo,

but a unique, sacred place for Japanese film lovers and filmmakers from all over the world. We are proud and honoured to have been able to show two films at Iwanami Hall, "A German Life" on its 50th anniversary and now "A Jewish Life" as one of the last films to play here.

Over 5 decades Iwanami Hall has been a window to films from around the world for hundreds of thousands of visitors, a microcosm of world cinema - truly a temple of culture.

Takano Etsuko and Kawakita Kashiko, the founders of the "Equipe du Cinema" and of this house, were cosmopolitans who brought the films of the world into this small hall and thus inspired countless visitors.

With Iwanami Hall, not only a cinema will be closed, but the life's work of merited people will be extinguished, as well as that of the many staff members who have dedicated their lives to film, to cinema and international cultural exchange.

Ritsuko Iwanami, who took over this unique heritage and carried it on with great passion for many years, is now to close this institution. Due to the pandemic, Iwanami Hall is no longer profitable. But we must not measure everything in terms of profit.

Art and culture is something that sets us apart from all other species and is probably more valuable than money and profit. The pandemic will eventually pass; this institution will be lost forever.

Culture is not the only area affected by Corona, although it is one of the most vulnerable ones.

Japan is proud of its millennia-old culture and traditions and the Japanese people have a great affinity for the arts. Film is a comparatively young artistic form, one that gives deep insights into other cultures,

one that unites peoples, one we can all learn from. It would be an immense loss for a cultural nation like Japan to be without Iwanami Hall. Cinemas are magical places and this one especially.

A place of fantasy in feature films and a sometimes irritating but educational place in documentaries.

Iwanami Hall has always connected both genres. So let us fight to maintain the cinema as a mystical space where our dreams and nightmares are reflected in the light of the screen.
