The weirdest day. I cannot tell you how much I did not want to fight this case. How much I did not want to be in court today. All I can say is that when the chips are down, people come through. Thank you to everyone who’s been with me through this darkest time 💕
Being a defendant in a libel trial is like being the guest of honour at the shittiest party you never wanted to go to. Thank you to @jesssearch for organising this behind my back. *The nicest surprise*. And to every single person who chipped into the crowdfunder 💕💕💕🙏🙏🙏

This is a really important article by @PeterKGeoghegan that encapsulates what many of us fear. That we are in a slide toward a ‘managed’ democracy. This is how it happens. This is what it looks like.…
Far too few people shouting about this. This was excellent by @Freedland but this collection of bills individually diminish our democracy & collectively take a blunderbuss to it & are happening now in plain sight. And once passed, there’s no coming back…
And watch this @allthecitizens interview with @DPuttnam. Actually listen to what he’s saying.

“Elements of the Nazi playbook" are unfolding now.

"Slowly, slowly, slowly, we are drifting into accepting a diminished democracy"

Extraordinary interview with @davidnabarro of @who. A stark stark warning about what’s ahead.

‘I’ve been watching & working on this pandemic since January 2020 & I’ve never been more concerned than I am tonight, not just about the UK but about the world.’
‘I want to talk directly to those who accuse us of scaremongering. I’ve spent 45 years doing this kind of work & my whole approach is to enable life to go on..this is serious. I don’t like comparing it to last year. To me this is unprecedented.’

@who’s special envoy on Covid-19
‘That suggests you’re calling for social gatherings to be limited?’

‘’s doubling every 2 days. Do you know what that means? It means it will be 8 times more serious in 1 week, 40 times more serious in 2 weeks, 3-400 times in 3 weeks. Over 1000 times more serious in 4 weeks’

Can I point out something bizarre & troubling? @ft has scoop today. An interview with head of @gchq. A week after @BBCRadio4 has head of MI6.

There’s a common thread: data.

Specifically: national security implications of it in hands of enemy states
This is an important positioning piece. It’s result of a meeting between head of GCHQ & editor of FT, ahead of new cyber warfare strategy.

And the headline is China.

China’s accelerationist command of technology is a threat to national security. This is undoubtedly true.

China was also one of the headline threats the head of MI6 spoke about last week.

But he also said this:

“If you allow another country to gain access to critical data about your society, over time that will erode you sovereignty.”

NEW: A journalist last won a Nobel prize in 1935 & he couldn’t pick it up because he was in a Nazi camp.

We’re again at “a sliding doors moment” says @mariaressa.

My interview with both her & Dmitry Muratov for @ObserverUK & their warning for the world.…
It’s a hair-on-the-back-of your neck moment. Listen to @mariaressa & Dmitry Muratov. They are the canaries in the coal mine.

If freedom of the press is in trouble, democracy is in trouble, we are all in trouble.

And that’s exactly what this Nobel is signalling.
And if you want to look at the specific historic parallels, then this is even more chilling. Carl Von Ossietzky won the prize in 1935 for exposing Germany’s secret re-armament.

And as Muratov points out here Russia’s aggressive military & expansionist plans are in plain sight

It’s the apathy & blindness of what is happening in Britain that’s truly terrifying.

The set of bills the government is currently seeking to get through parliament is a full-scale attack on our democracy.

But the Elections Bill perhaps most egregious of all.

This is Michael Gove. He was the co-convener of Vote Leave - found by the Electoral Commission found to have committed massive election fraud.

Michael Gove is now seeking to tear up the Electoral Commission

This is not accidental. It was the Electoral Commission’s investigation into Vote Leave that has prompted this.

We have to see this for what it is. It is an act of authoritarianism.

The sleaze is one thing. But this is structural. Permanent.

Steve Bannon has *finally*been indicted.

BIG news in America. But let’s not forget Big Steve’s interference in our own democracy. (And how Facebook has facilitated him at every turn.)

Exhibit 1.

Here’s @nigel_farage on the day article 50 was triggered:

‘Well done Bannon, well done Breitbart. You helped with this hugely’

Exhibit 2: Remember this? Just a casual offer to illegally fund @nigel_farage’s new Brexit party

‘If you’re interested, what I’d like to do is set up something & I’ll fund it somehow. And I think you’re the perfect guy’
