(1/11) $MPL @maplefinance is a decentralized protocol for uncollateralized lending. It has grown from 0 to more then $500 million a little over 6 months.
An overview of the fundamentals, tokenomics and future of $MPL
👇👇👇
(2/11) Vision 💡
Current crypto lending protocols like @Compound and @AAve offer loans that must be fully collateralized. This means that the amount of money put in is equivalent or more to the amount of the loan.
Maple Finance is aims to transform that. ...
The protocol offers loans to credit worthy companies or projects. Starting off with crypto projects, but ultimately to any qualifying organization worldwide.
The vision is that anyone can start a pool. This enables expertise in a certain niche to start a pool. ...
This democratized lending and allows many more companies and organizations to access loans.
An expert in SaaS companies for gold miners might start a pool for them to access loans. Or a specialist in FinTech in the capital of Nigeria might start a pool for those businesses.
(3/11) Product 📲
There are three parties in the $MPL ecosystem:
- Lenders, anyone looking for yield.
- Borrowers, premium (crypto) institutions.
- Delegates, they determine the terms of the loan. Every delegate has a pool in which lenders and borrowers can participate.

(5/11) Team 🏋️
@sidbpowell is one of the co-founders. He has a background in Debt Capital Markets.
@joe_defi is the other co-founder. He also has a background in Finance.
@lucasmanual_eth is the lead smart contract development and @chadlynch33 is the tech lead at $MPL.
(6/11) Tokenomics 💵
The token serves three purposes:
1.Staking. Receiving interest, but paying when a loan defaults.
2.Governance, voting on budgets and decisions.
3.The token holders share in the fees generated by the protocol.
(7/11) Competition⚔️
The main competitor of $MPL is @TrustToken $TRU. They have $900 million TVL, which is down from $1.2 billion in September 2021. Their model is different. The TrueFi team evaluates the borrower, sets up the agreements and accepts them into the platform.
The borrower can then request a loan from the lenders (anyone participating) and the lenders can approve the loan. They have a centralized gate, but a decentralized model of approving loans.
There is also a concept called flashloans, these are short term uncollateralized loans. @AaveAave and @ComFlashloans are two protocols offering that.
#flashloans are required to be paid off within one transaction block, meaning that they are not in direct competition with Maple
However other lending protocols like Aave and Compound are also looking to get into the uncollateralized lending space.
I expect this to not be a winners take-all market, like AMM’s, but I think several protocols can really succeed in the borrowing and lending infrastructure market. Institutions will never go all-in on one protocol, but prefer to spread risk.
(8/11) Roadmap🛣
The upcoming year Maple focuses on three elements:
1.Interoperability. Increase the number of integrations with other protocols, increased LP token functionality and improved entry/exit for LPs.
2.Usability. Make it easier to use the protocol and an overall better customer support and experience.
3.Protocol utility. Single sided staking to prevent impairment loss and better governance.
The goal is to have $3 billion TVL end of Q1 and $10 billion end of the year.
(9/11) Community👩💻🧑🏾💻
There is not yet a big retail community around $MPL. It is mainly relient on institutions and has a lot of credibility in that area. $MPL works closely together with @circlepay and @jerallaire is a public supporter of the Maple protocol.
(10/11) Conclusion 🌑🌓🌕
Maple Finance is a protocol with immense potential. 10-20 years from now a large part of commercial lending will be done on chain and there will be several protocols providing the infrastructure for that.
Maple has the right team and strategy to pull that off and has decent momentum so far. I will mainly be watching the competition; since the biggest risk I see is execution risk.
Disclosure: I have a 5% position in $MPL in my 100x in 10 years portfolio.
