The holidays see a lot of new puppies arriving in families either as a gift or a purchase. However, puppies need training, and can be trained as early as six weeks of age. The sooner the training is started, the more successful it will be.
Potty training, leash training, and even sit and stay can be learned by a puppy. Potty training of course tops the list of priorities as this must start early or individuals are left with a dog that continues to “do its business” inside the home.
Although some individuals do not agree with crate training, it is not harmful to a puppy or dog, and in fact, is seen as a den by most dogs. It gives them a means to escaped hustle and bustle and stress in a household especially when small children exist or other animals.
Anxiety is high in a new puppy. This does not mean that crates should be used to confine any puppy or dog for hours. In fact, the door can be left open, and a soft mattress and toys will make the crate attractive to a puppy or dog.
In addition, if crated, a puppy will whine when needing to go outside to relieve themselves, and all owners should immediately take the puppy outside, even if it is the middle of the night.
