TIL on #100DaysOfCloud Twitter Spaces with @DonReamey and @lounecl about Getting Hired at Microsoft / Azure

(rt to enter eBook draw)

🧵summary thread
1/ Microsoft and Azure are the same company. In terms of the hiring process, it is generally the same between these two organizations for similar roles. eg. Software Developer Engineer (SDE)

A Hiring Manager's technical challenges can greatly vary
/2 Microsoft and Azure Certifications at least for the Software Developer Engineer (SDE) are not a factor during hiring.

Consider whether the role is working on the underlying infrastructure or building workloads ontop of Microsoft services
/3 So Certifications might be useful for roles where you are building ontop of Microsoft Services, but during the interview process, it's not going to matter.

Certs are more valuable at large consultancies eg. Deloitte, Accenture, Slalom
4/ If you're looking to use a project to land a role, it may not factor much or at all during the interview.

So if not certifications or projects then what for SDE?
Classic Comp Sci knowledge
5/ You don't need to be a University graduate you can use things like to obtain that knowledge for free:

6/ @freeCodeCamp has lots of great free resources:

freeCodeCamp is working on free online University for Comp Sci that will be accredited.

7/ The Microsoft Online Assessment also called the Online Technical Screen (OTS), is one of the first stages of the hiring process for software engineer roles

You'll want to spend time on LeetCode

8/ @lounecl was hired at Microsoft through the Leap Program:

The Microsoft Leap Apprenticeship Program’s mission is to recruit, develop, and upskill.
unconventional talent for employability into the technology industry worldwide.

9/ @DonReamey gave an example of

Designing an elevator: Write classes. Take an abstract problem, break it down to a clear design and corner cases, and potential problems.

What things would break down in real-world and design for that.

10/ Picking up a whiteboard and practicing a home is a good recommendation. During COVID times whiteboards are vanishing but its still a good practice.
11/ The Microsoft Loops "Hiring process" can go for a few rounds. Expect Behavioural questions.

The recording. It will only be up for a few days, but sometimes for those in different timezones to get to listen.
