[Thread: Transitions Analysis – Top 5 Men SP of season 2021-22]
(in collaboration with @lunnarias)
Everyone is judged with the same standards. The latest, cleanest versions of SP were used to annotate.
Basic entries, required footwork in the StSq weren't counted as transitions
5.2 Detailed footwork of Yuma Kagiyama's When Your Smiling
6.1 Overall comments:
- Jason, Yuma & Shoma used similar amounts of power skating while Yuzuru used around half the amount.
- Nathan, Yuma have more basic skating moves than complex ones + difficult turns/steps.
- Yuzu, Jason have more complex + difficult footwork than basic ones
6.2 Jason, Shoma, Yuma: less basic multidirection skating than power skating.
Yuzu: more multidirection skating than power skating, transitions are almost 50%
Nathan: high % of basic multidirectional skating, average power skating, lowest % of complex moves & difficult footwork
7. Detailed annotation of each performance made by me and Elisa (@lunnarias) in excel sheets.
Big big apology to Yuma!! 😭
His video is not fully posted. Please see the full video here!
- Basic power skating: 45
- Basic multi-directional skating: 28
- Basic skating moves: 20
- Complex skating moves: 6
- Difficult turns/steps: 6
8. Annotators' commentary
Hours spent nitpicking every footwork in slo-motion and reviewing again and again really gives Elisa and I deeper understanding of 5 skaters' skating skills and how their programs are constructed. So please read our comments if you're interested!
8.1 Comments about Yuzuru's Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso
8.3 Comments about Nathan Chen - La Bohème
I annotated and edited Nathan's SP the last. I hope my words doesn't sound harsh. But it's very hard to find positive things in Nathan's SP after reviewing the other 4
Last but not least, I want to give a big fat thanks to Elisa @lunnarias who initiated the idea and offered to help me annotating, reviewing, giving constructive opinions about everything.
This project is not possible without your help so thank you so much!

I wouldn’t say Nathan didn’t put any effort in his TR contents. The opening & after his 4F is the highlight in terms of TR in his SP. However, I find them rather simple with only 2 short series of Twizzles and basic skating. And it doesn't really fit the music
Nathan uses a lots of 2-foot stroking but his speed and flow is not good. With that amount of basic power skating, I expect much better speed and flow. It is because his stroking and edgework are not good enough to fully utilize the speed and power that 2-foot stroking gives
Yuma’s TR really did an amazing job of showing his speed & flow. They go well with the upbeat, happy music. However, he relies on basic moves, mostly hops & in repeating them which takes out variety & put him at the lowest level in the list in no. of complex+difficult footwork
I wish he could have shown us more variety and complexity in his footwork which could really improve his PE and IN too. However, there are moments that his 2-foot stroking matches with the music, I think it’s smart (video below)
Individual commentary:
Yuzuru Hanyu - Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso
The small number of basic 2-foot stroking and the diverse but deliberated uses of skating moves, 1-foot and multidirectional skating are what make this SP incredible
For me, skaters always look detached while gaining speed for jumps (with tons of 2-foot stroking). For Rondo, the lack of consecutive crossovers and how each footwork is done with different tempo and intensity to match music really highlights Yuzuru’s musicality and commitment
His transitions are spread out evenly in the program. He doesn't just gain speed from 2-foot stroking. His gains of speed for jumps are hidden very well behind his 1-foot, multi-directional skating. Video shown how he gains speed through variety of footwork. Very impressive!
