There's an assumption that because I'm detrans, I must support restricting trans healthcare. This comes from both pro- and anti-trans folks.
While I understand why ppl think this, not all detrans ppl are pro-gatekeeping.
here are some things I want, as a detrans person..
- research into health post-detrans. what to expect after medical/surgical detransition, short and long-term
- legal protections & resources for TGNC ppl
- safety to talk about de/retrans experiences w/o fear of harassment, or fear that our stories will be used w/o our consent
- not feeling medical/surgical transition is necessary to be "truly trans," whether from community or medical system
- respect for transitioned bodies & TGNC identities
- accessible, affordable, and QUALITY healthcare. doctors who actually care about our wishes & wellbeing.
- allowing trans & questioning ppl to express concerns, fears, & doubts without stigma, or at risk of being withheld care
- allowing trans people to re-question their gender if they wish
- accepting there is no singular "correct" transgender experience or transition pathway
- improved mental health services before, during, and after transition
- improved access & quality of info about all options for transition
- listen to negative experiences & regrets of both trans & detrans ppl, learn how to better prevent negative outcomes in the future
- freedom to choose what transition steps we do/don't want, whether "typical" or not
- actual support spaces for de/retrans ppl, where we are treated as individuals with unique needs & desires. not trying to push us down a certain path or utilizing us for political purposes
I don't want trans folks & ppl questioning their gender to suffer. I don't want more gatekeeping. I want everyone to have not only the freedom to choose their path, but also the best possible resources for which to find what path is best for them. I want autonomy for all of us.
Detrans folks want to be heard and supported, just like everyone else. I want trans & de/retrans ppl to be able to have conversations oriented towards understanding each other, not undermining each other. I want us to work together for a better community for all TGNC people.

If we were to survey incarcerated women on the issues that concern them the most, I'm fairly confident that "trans women in female prisons" would not be very high on the list.
Incarcerated women have higher rates of mental health issues, substance abuse, unresolved trauma, history of abuse, STIs, breast and cervical cancer, preterm birth, miscarriage.. Their health is failed by the prison system.
Why are we not talking about that?
Why are we not talking about decarcerating women on drug and property crimes? Implementing family sentencing alternative programs? Prioritizing rehabilitation over punishment? Ending social benefit bans for convicted ppl?
Why are we instead obsessed with trans women in prisons?
