As we all sit with what happened -and did not happen- w/ regard to voting rights last night, let’s take a moment to reflect on the fact that voting rights FINALLY got a full debate on the floor of the US Senate. To those who say that was a “waste of time” please note that this is
exactly what senators are elected to do. They are elected to debate and vote on the laws of this country. It was critical to have a full and public debate so that everyone could hear and see where each senator stands on the issue of ensuring that everyone can exercise this
fundamental right. The position of each senator is determined not just by their rhetoric but by their vote. You cannot say you support voting rights but then vote against the measures which would advance and secure those rights. The debate needed to happen. The floor vote needed
to happen. The debate and floor vote were illuminating. Senators can no longer hide behind meaningless statements claiming they support voting rights. The ultimate position of every senator was made clear last night. Thank you @SenSchumer and your staff for putting this issue
On the floor so that all can see, and so that history will record, where the individuals elected to represent the interests of the people of this country stood on this critical issue.#VotingRightsMatter#weneededthedebate
