🧵Here's a thread about the death of a podcast (which is actually about the life of a podcast because that's how you tell a good story).
Ten years ago I'd just had my first show commissioned at ABC @RadioNational: Off Track, a celebration of the natural world!
🌿🎙️
I’d pitched a climate science show but, at the time, there wasn't much appetite for that...
[SPOILER ALERT: I kinda made that show anyway]
So Off Track became a nature/outdoors show with field recording at its heart.
I was lucky enough to make the show for 2 years. It's a real privilege working on a documentary program like this, exploring the country's nooks and crannies alongside passionate experts. What a dream! My memories of the show are so much bigger than the episodes themselves...
During my stint on the show I met Little Penguins...
In the final quarter of 2013 Off Track was home to a co-production with the @bbcworldservice, "Saving The Oceans" which took me to Kiribati, Fiji, New Zealand, and Far North Queensland...
In 2014 I moved to NYC and @jones_ann took over the show. And in all honesty, this is when the show found its wings. It was like I'd made the show for Ann and had just been keeping it warm for a few years. Ann *is* the ABC's Nature Nerd, and it shows...
Ann made Off Track for 8 years! She brought such an elegant touch to the show, alongside a deep appreciation for the natural world.
I'll leave it to Ann to reflect on her legacy, because this weekend, as good things do, Off Track comes to an end...
We're always striving to find compelling ways to start a show, but rarely do we get the opportunity to give shows a fitting end. I think Ann's done that here.
Off Track sounded like nothing else on RN. I'm so proud of the show, and will always love it dearly. It changed my life.
Oh, and if you're sad that Off Track's wrapping up... Worried that you'll miss Ann Jones' wonderful take on nature... Well don't.
There's something super freaken awesome coming soon... 🦆
