SEFF remembers Samuel Millar, 71, Protestant farmer, murdered, reportedly by the UDA, found in Sep/77 at a disused water-filled quarry.

It was said that Samuel was warned not to say anything when he discovered a gang was using his land to hide a vehicle. He was due to testify..

..at a case aboit a raid on a S L'derry post office. He'd been abducted a wk before it came to court. A full-time member of the UDR (but who saluted a different code & was also thought to be in the UDA) was jailed for life after he admitted to the murder.

..he & another man went to see Samuel to ask him to change his statement & not to give evidence. When Samuel refused, the UDR man went to the boot of his car & took out a shaft of wood & hit Samuel on the top of the head.

..more times. He said they put Samuel in the boot & drove to Lough Neigh. They lifted him out & he was said to be moaning. They said Samuel was in agony & they didn't want to leave him like that so the UDR hit him on the head with an iron bar & put him in the bushes.

..reportedly came back later on to bury the body.

Samuel was from Derrynoid, Draperstown.

Samuel stood by the law & decency, at least one of those who were involved in his murder abused the power they had been afforded as a uniform wearing soldier.

His actions were not ....

.. reflective of the overwhelming majority of others who served either in home-based regiments or regular regiments and who did so with honour and distinction.
