Watch on @WUSA9: Police are preparing to hold a briefing after a student was shot at Magruder High School in Derwood. A person connected with the shooting is in custody.
It's almost 5 p.m., and students haven't yet been dismissed from school.
.@mcpdChief Marcus Jones has arrived for the press conference. I also see in my stream States Attorney John McCarthy (@McCarthyMoCo) and Assistant Chief Administrative Officer @EarlStoddard.
The presser has started. @mcpdChief Marcus Jones and Interim Superintendent Monifa McKnight will make statements.
At 12:53 p.m., hs security became aware of a situation in the bathroom. A male student was shot and 911 was called at 12:57 p.m.
Magruder was locked down by 1:05 and the school was secure. MCPD assessed the building and identified a suspect, found a handgun on him, and took him into custody.
The student shot is hospitalized with serious injuries and is undergoing surgery now. @wusa9
"It was handled flawlessly to bring this to a peaceful resolution," @mcpdChief says.
McKnight thanks Jones and MCPD for "outstanding work" in handling today's incident.
She thanks Principal Leroy Evans for handling "a very serious incident."
McKnight acknowledges the "range of feelings" students and families are experiencing. McKnight thanks teachers and staff for their response.
She says to students, "Your bravery, your courage, and your cooperation are to be commended."
McKnight sends thoughts and prayers to the student who was shot. She urges students to interact in a "nonviolent" manner.
She says "we are also concerned for the students and staff at Magruder High School."
A crisis management team will be at Magruder this weekend. The employee assistance program will be available for staff members.
McKnight says an incident like this impacts "everyone" and she will work to make sure every school is prepared to address concerns.
"The safety and security of students and staff" is teh #1 concern of MCPS. "Overall MCPS school are safe and incidents like today's schools are extremely rare," McKnight said.
MCPS will work to examine what schools could have done to better respond to this situation.
"This is not a problem that schools can solve alone," McKnight said. She says gun violence is a problem and there needs to be a swift response.
.@mcpdChief says there's an investigation about what led to this incident. It involved two students and they are confirming the "exact location" of the shooting. They know it happened within school walls.
"The school was on lockdown," Jones said.
Police and MCPS worked through tips to locate the suspect.
Jones says it's unclear how the gun got into the school. It's unclear if it's a ghost gun.
Police have not talked to the suspect's parents at this time, according to @mcpdChief.
.@mcpdChief doesn't know what grade the suspect/victim were in.
Doors were locked with teachers and students inside. Once there was a lockdown, Jones says officials didn't think there was an immediate threat to the community.
.@mcpdChief says "it wasn't an active shooter." They figured out where the suspect was located, there were no other threats to the school community, he says.
.@mcpdChief says the suspect was located in a classroom. "I'll just leave it at that...we're still interviewing witnesses."
Police found the gun nearby. Surveillance footage is being reviewed.
Press conference has ended.
PIO for @MCPS says the next update will be either "late tonight or tomorrow morning."
