Learn the secrets why you and 59% of userโ€™s share some articles only by reading the Headlines

The only guide you need to create Killer Headlines ๐Ÿงต
Why you should care about headlines?

The avg person has an 8 second attention span, and you need to pull your audience in from the second they start reading

If you fail to make it impactful and clickable, every other marketing step that you take will be a total waste of time
Well, have you ever shared an article on social media without even reading it?

News site Science post tested this in 2016 by posting the following headline

'Study:70% of users only read the headline of science stories before commentingโ€™

Almost 46000 people shared the post
The thing is below the headline there was no comprehensible text, only lorem ipsum, the gobbledygook that publishers use as dummy text before the real content is added

Another study by Columbia University confirmed that this sharing-without-reading behavior is rampant.

59 % of links shared on social media have never been clicked on.

I know you also have done this :)

Upworthy, which is known as a โ€˜viralโ€™ content site, considers 25 headlines for every single piece of content

Upworthy claims to have 50 million visitor engagements every month

The 5 steps guide I use to create attention grabbing headlines are,
1. Create a Hook

A headline without a Hook is an opportunity lost already

Hook hits the readers' emotion that drives them to click;

Emotions can be

- joy
- fear
- curiosity
- resource
- fear of missing out and many more
โ€œ4 Usโ€ for creating a hook in your headlines:

โ€ขmake the headline โ€˜Uโ€™nique
โ€ขbe โ€˜Uโ€™ltra-specific
โ€ขconvey a sense of โ€˜Uโ€™rgency
โ€ขprovide something โ€˜Uโ€™seful
2. Create an Open Loop

Open loops are mysteries

You've been given information, but not enough to solve the mystery

So, our mind seeks to gather more information to solve the mystery and put it to rest
We hate leaving jobs unfinished and want the gratification of finishing a job

You can employ this tactic in copywriting by "forcing" your audience to remember you and your copy

But... why?
Well, it's an open loop: our minds start to question this

Unanswered questions in our minds beg to be answered and we don't forget about them easily

So the general format for this tactic goes as follows:
1 Create a mystery early on

2 Include content in the middle to keep people waiting on the solution

3 Include your message at the end

4 Either solve the mystery and create another one, or never solve the original mystery (both options leave your readers remember you till end)
3. Use a Unique Rationale

The word โ€œrationaleโ€ simply means โ€œan underlying reason why something should be done

If you want people to read your content, do you have a good reason why they should?
With 59% of people sharing content without reading it first, we need to make sure our headlines appeal to people who will.

Some of the rationales that you can include in your headlines are:

-Tips
-Reasons
-Secrets
-Lessons
-Ideas
-Ways
-Principles and many more
4. Check headline with TACT formula

After writing headline check which one is best by using the rule known as

T- Taste
A- Attractiveness
C- Clarity
T- Truth
After writing check whether your headline is

- Tasteful (meaning it avoids offending anyone)
- Attracts an audience (target audience)
- Clear (clarity in message)
- True (not misleading)

If it fails any of this tests, itโ€™s not ready for publication.

Keep trying
5. Attention to Target Audience

The headline should be audience specific.

If you try to appeal to everyone you appeal to no-one.

Personally, I use โ€œyouโ€ a lot in my headlines.

I have experienced that for every headline that contains โ€˜you,โ€™ the engagement is very high.
Recap to create killer headlines

1 Create a Hook
2 Keep an Open Loop
3 Use a Unique Rationale
4 Check headline for TACT formula
5 Attention to Target Audience
Here are some other quick tips for headlines:

-Using Active Voice in your headline makes it more effective and engaging

-Keep your headline Simple

-Write SEO Friendly headlines

-Avoid over promising or click bait headlines

-Using numbers in headline improves open rates
And thatโ€™s it folkโ€™s!

It's so simple, you never have to complicate it nor scratch your heads wondering how to hook your reader
